I believe each pad is either of the numbers, e.g. if you program a user code of 1357 then 2468 will work the same, or 1458, 2367, etc. It just needs the pads pressed in the proper sequence.
There should be an access code maybe on the back of the device, if you have mounted it, remove it and inspect the back of it for code also check for code anywhere inside the the advertisement from package. if you bought it from a neighbor and it was opened, give it back,,,nice try

Problem fixed by having my wife look it up on the Schlage website. The deadbolt has a flash memory so your combinations and codes will not be lost when the batteries are changed.

Hi... You have too be sure that the deadbolt is free when it go inside the deadbolt hole... however this system is very low power and the (over torque clutch) will sleep if the deadbolt it's not completely free.
Also if you try to open the door before you unlock it, you may block the the deadbolt inside the deadbolt hole. Take care too unlock the door before open-it...

I had the same question as my son installed the lock. Instructions should be printed on the cover you remove (inside the house). They need to make removing that cover MUCH easier, I'm always afraid I'll break it. Anyway, you press the button once for the first number. To enter a "guest" code, press the button twice then enter the 2nd code in the keypad and press the lock button. Now try both main # and guest #, both should open ttthe lock.
