NOT A BAD DIY PROJECT. BUT, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW STEP BY STEP. THIS IS A CASE WHERE MISSING A STEP CAN CAUSE LOTS OF PROBLEMS.

I would take a close look at the sprocket/gear assembly. There is a bronze bushing that wears and lets that assembly lean. This can cause the chain to miss the teeth on the sprocket just a bit and will cause some weird noises. If it gets bad enough the chain will come off the sprocket. I have no idea why it would only do it in the down direction when there is much less strain on the whole thing. You might also remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and wears out. It will be obvious if it is going bad.
