Can anyone help? Automatic transmission 1997 jetta
If the reverse lights only illuminate when the transmission is shifted into neutral and not in any other gear selection. I recommend taking a look at the neutral safety switch. It is possible that something is going on with the transmission. When you shift the transmission into its full range. Does it seem ok? Is there any resistance towards either end of its range? I would look at the switch first. Also take a look at the wiring and plug as well. Look for any damage. Please write back if there is any other symptoms that you didn't forward earlier.

I can’t find the neutral switch it’s a automatic where would it be?
I know its an automatic. No worries... Open the hood and look down at the transmission. The neutral safety switch is on top, towards the back and near the shift cable. For some reason I can not send you photos of the part right now. You can see it if you Google it. All the online stores that carry automotive parts have this item for sale and pictures as well. Hope this helps.
The site started working again. Here are a couple pictures of the part. Beckarnley Is well known and reputable. I buy there stuff a lot. But their neutral safety switch is over $70. (BECKARNLEY 201-2697 Neutral Safety Switch). Your call. Good luck.

Have you just replaced lights or done anything with tail lights?

I'm told and read a sun shell may be broke. Common problem for this vehicle. Shop will possibly rebuild and use aftermarket kit parts to correct problems the transmission had originally. Cost is probably between $1300 to 1600 to repair. Good luck I got the same problem on a 97 Jimmy and 3 shops said the same thing.

Unfortunately the only thing to do in this case is to open the gearbox and see the real status of the cylinders, it's very possible the cylinders do not make contact anymore.
