Stop using it. Either there is a poor connection or there may be something more involved going on inside. Is the an electric or gas dryer? Is the whole length of cord getting hot or is one particular area hotter than another? If the cord has hot spot/s it may be frayed inside. Please tell me more about your appliance and what you have for tools. If the machine needs more than a cord. Depending on the model. It may have a short, damaged motor or damaged heating element.

SOURCE: my dryer plug is 4 and the electrical plug in the wall is 3
There is no "adapter" per se, you MAY be able to swap to a 3-wire cord, however that may be against local code. The only other option in that case would be to have a qualified electrician install the newer 4-wire outlet. You need to find out what you local codes are with regard to this issue. If you do change to a 3-wire cord to macth that outlet, it is critical that it be installed correctly.

It sounds like the element shorted out and caused more damage to the unit. Remove and check the heating elment, thermal fuse (located near element), and timer. The timer will be hard to test if you don't have a meter. I would suggest that you check the element first. This is probably your main problem.

make sure entire machine is clear of lint and the operating thermostat is the likely problem. In these cases I prefer to replace all the thermostats unless it has been replaced recently. Eric
