Did they replace the fan, or did they replace the computer?

Did you do so? If so, how did HP respond?

The purchase of the computer includes a one-year warranty,
i.e., HP will fix anything that fails, within one-year of purchase,
at *THEIR* cost.

SOURCE: my system operating fan 90B

If you are having problems with the cooling fan the best solution is to replace it. Fans are very difficult to actually fix unless you know how to replace the copper coils which are used to create the magnetic force used to turn the fan mechanism.

Run the Check Disk Utility

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command. If check disk fails to fix it, then you will need to reinstall your operating system. Do a Repair Install so that you don't lose your data.

How To Fix The HP Notebook System Fan 90b Error Message On Startup?
The HP Notebook System Fan 90b Error Message On Startup indicates a serious problem which exists in relation to the heat removal process. Here, as per as HP technical support study is concerned, one of the two possible events is possible: first, the system fan is not at all spinning or even it may be the case that the system fan is not spinning properly and the second cause may be the temperature inside the case which is too high and the fan can't spin fast enough to remove the heat situation.

Steps to fix the HP Notebook fan error 90b
Step1: Working with the exterior vent
Ā·If a user is noticing that the system fan is spinning and is blowing quite warm air from the computer, then cleaning all the exterior vents to remove dust buildup instantly by blowing air through the vent openings is necessary. This should be done while the computer is completely in "off' mode. Dust can further accumulate inside the vent opening and all around internal cooling components to prevent the heat removal process.

Step2: Perform a instant hard reset
Ā·Performing a hard reset can further reset all the recorded thermal values in the memory by enabling you to work with the computer again even if it's only spinning for a short time to access. Save all the important files before it is in service process.

Step3: Updating the BIOS
Ā·While updating the BIOS set-up, it may further help prevent this critical error from occurring in future as suggested by HP Notebook support
Step4: Computer servicing process
Ā·Enable the computer service to easily clean up all the internal components and then replace the system fan carefully if necessary. Ensure that all the following items are well addressed while servicing
Ā·Thoroughly remove all the available dust from all internal cooling components in the device.
Ā·Ensure that wires from the system as well as from the CPU fans are well connected to the motherboard in secured mode.
Ā·Ensure that your system fan blades are spinning correctly, and are not producing any unwanted noises. Replacing of the system fan is essential if it's not working correctly. Your above issue is now resolved completely. But do call us if you still have problem with your HP Notebooks at HP notebook Customer Support Toll-Free 1-800-213-8289 section anytime.

90B fan error

Start your notebook and start tapping the F2 key. In the diagnostic screen perform the hard disk diagnostic. If the diagnostic reports a hard disk smart test fail, then your hard disk is failing and must be replaced. That is the only way you will be able to return your notebook to useable condition.
If hard disk is ok I suggest you goto HP support Forums at

Screen says the system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly. System fan (90B). The computor is 2days old. by pressing enter the computor operates ok. please advise. thank you

I would take the laptop back to the store I bought it from and ask for an exchange. Changing a fan on a laptop can be a very intense process involving removing the entire motherboard. This could also be a bios setting issue but to seek advice from someone who hasn't touched the laptop for a fan issue is not a good idea. Heat is a laptops worst enemy and the only things fighting that enemy are your fans.

More that likely the fan is going out. Check the fan exhaust to see how much air it is moving if any. A laptop cooling pad will probably help out and possible prolong failure. If its under a year old, the maufacturer may fix it for you. You'll just have to contact HP and see if they will, or if they can get you a new fan to replace yourself if they wont do it for you.
