If the fridge is overcooling it could be the thermostat. If the defrost panel is permanently switched on, overcooling might not be noticed but the condenser will become quite hot.
If running continuously, there is no overcooling and the condenser remains cool, either the compressor is defective or the refrigerant has leaked away.

SOURCE: hotpoint fridge model CSx20KATA AD defrost timer
Hi, This model does not have a defrost timer. It actually has a motherboard. If you have a defrost problem, the nore common part to check first is the defrost heater or termination switch ( bi-metal). These two parts are located inside the freezer compartment behind the rear panel where the frost is building up.
These two parts must have continuity. If one or noth of them have no continuity, they need replaced. Please use a hair dryer (NOT a sharp object the remove the frost from the evaporator coils.
If you need any more help or need to order the part, I can help you and we can order the parts off my web site WWW.Whirlpoolpartssurplus.com
Let me know if I can help.
Thanks
Vic

your defrost t-stat is located behind the rear frzr panel. it's a round disk w/ two wires, org/wht. if you see heavy frost built on the rear panel, then you a a defrost. it could be your timer, heater or t-stat. if i knew your model # and can tell you how to advance into the defrost cycle.
