My Hotpoint RLFM171P 6' Larder Fridge is running constantly. I am in the process of replacing the thermostat but wonder if this fridge has a defrost timer and if so where it might be located.

If the fridge is overcooling it could be the thermostat. If the defrost panel is permanently switched on, overcooling might not be noticed but the condenser will become quite hot.

If running continuously, there is no overcooling and the condenser remains cool, either the compressor is defective or the refrigerant has leaked away.

SOURCE: hotpoint fridge model CSx20KATA AD defrost timer

Hi, This model does not have a defrost timer. It actually has a motherboard. If you have a defrost problem, the nore common part to check first is the defrost heater or termination switch ( bi-metal). These two parts are located inside the freezer compartment behind the rear panel where the frost is building up.
These two parts must have continuity. If one or noth of them have no continuity, they need replaced. Please use a hair dryer (NOT a sharp object the remove the frost from the evaporator coils.
If you need any more help or need to order the part, I can help you and we can order the parts off my web site WWW.Whirlpoolpartssurplus.com
Let me know if I can help.

Thanks
Vic

SOURCE: Freezer does not get cold enough...

your defrost t-stat is located behind the rear frzr panel. it's a round disk w/ two wires, org/wht. if you see heavy frost built on the rear panel, then you a a defrost. it could be your timer, heater or t-stat. if i knew your model # and can tell you how to advance into the defrost cycle.

Hotpoint rla31 motor constantly running/freezing at the back

Your fridge is cooled by the freezer, the thermostat is within the Fridge to tell it to shut off, you might have a bad fan or a build up of frost where the air is sent to the fridge, check where air goes to the fridge when it's running, if you don't feel air flow then something is up, best thing you can do is take everything out and allow the fridge to defrost, at leat 24hrs. then see what happens, if you don't feel air flow after the defrost then you fan is shot and you'll need to replace it.

Turned the fridge temperature up (ie. from 3 to 6) but fridge warmer than ever. Gauge on side ambiguous. Now wondering whether 1 is actually the coldest and 6 the warmest. Help! Fridge old so can't trace...

Keeping 3 to 5 degree is good. But check freezer is frosting good. If ice formation around the freezer is over, it will abstract the fan by functioning. If so, check defrost timer, thermostat and heater for not malfunctioning. If defrost cycle is good, there would be constant cool in fridge compartment.
Thanks.
