Check the motor belt.
It may need adjusting. or have come off.
If you do not have a manual look here...

Testimonial: "Hello Geoff, thank you for writing back. The 2 belts seem to be fine. Turning clockwise though I hear one "click" in the same spot with every rotation. Generally everything looks ok, but this is the first time I have taken this machine apart. It also has a bit of lint inside. Aloha, Claudia"
SOURCE: beeps several times and stops sewing.
I had the same problem. Through trial and error, I found the problem was with the thread tension. Usually the thread became wrapped around the spool holder as it was coming off the spool. As you continue to press the pedal, tension is created. When you release the pedal, some slack develops in the threading process and you are able to sew a few more stitches before the beeping starts again. If the thread is caught on the spool holder, simple re-thread the machine. That generally works for me. Also you can try to push to spool holder in as close as possible to the spool pin to alleviate any gaps. If the beeping continues to happen, place you thread in a cup behind the machine and thread as usual. You can also purchase an inexpensive thread holder. I made one out of a wood block and other odds and ends found around the house. Good Luck!

Get a stand alone spool holder, sometimes the spool pins arent high enough to support the thread or you can try a thread sock

Probably the belt tension needs adjusting, it is slipping like a car fanbelt and needs the same relative "give" when correctly tightened.
Remove the side cover where the handwheel is and loosen the motor fixing to adjust and increase the tension on the belt ....needs some slack, if you can move the belt 10mm with light pressure then it will be fine NOT TOO TIGHT or you will overload the motor. NOTE: If the side panel is not easily removed, ie 2 piece casing split in the middle, take it to a service centre or risk breaking the casing trying to get in....if it is more than a few years since last service, let someone do it all and get a sweet machine back, with no risk for not a whole lot of time or money

Try a little oil and let it set befor pulling.

SOURCE: Brother xl 2230 - cannot fill spool as holder does
The Rubber O-Ring on my XL-2230 turned into a gel like substance. The rubber actually decomposed. So I went to the hardware store and found a replacement O-Ring made of a better material. Winds great now.
