I had just finished watching a movie on my ps3 slim and it had just started to go back to the home screen (still dark and the dots of light were barely visible) when I accidentally ejected the disc and the system froze. I powered it off by holding the power button, restarted it, let it do the usual system check it does when it doesn't power down properly. It got to the home screen, I put a new DVD in, hit play and it froze while trying to load the movie. I powered the system off again, the same way. I tried to turn it back on but the screen stayed black for at least 10 mins. I restarted it in Safe Mode and tried to restore default settings (figured it'd be the easiest and wouldn't affect my game files). The system tried to restore for 3 days, so i figured it was frozen again because the HDD light wasn't on. Restarted in Safe Mode again and tried all of the options; restore file system and rebuild database don't work, my system stays on that screen and the HDD light isn't on, system update causes the system to freeze right there, and when I finally selected restore PS3 System, it says that the system storage cannot be accessed. What on Earth happened to my PS3 and is it possible to fix it without buying a new HDD?

This is a hard reset of the system, used when there is a catastrophic error etc. I have trawled these kind of sights and the main concensus is to ensure you have a back up of all important data. I experienced the same issue but the method above was advised by my games shop.

The problem is update 3.30. Whatever it contained, it hurt the systems ability to read from the BD Drive. I suspect you can play downloaded content forever without freezing. If correct, the is currently no fix. I am in the same boat. Our only hope is that Sony will come forward with a fix. Currently, if you call them they will say your system is faulty and you need to send it back to them for a swap.

Whenever you have a system that shuts down like that, you can expect to have hard drive problems.

Press and hold the power button until the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds)

Press and hold the power button again until you here 3 beeps. Let go.

If you have a HDMI cable, plug it up, if you have AV plug it in as well. If you have both settings on your TV, be sure to have them both inserted into the system. Also, make sure that you are switching your TV from HDMI to AV and vice versa.

It should ask you to connect your controller via usb and press the PS button in

the middle of your controller. There will be a menu with 6 options. Try 1-5

When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a

usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the

PS3. Good luck..
