My HP pavilion mx75 computer suddenly refuses to turn on. It was working fine, now won't turn on. Can it be saved? It has a good monitor and printer. And no, it's not the connections. Also I noticed a flash of green light on the back as I disconnected then reconnected the power cord on the back of the computer. So there's some life left. What a waste to junk it. Think of the planet!

Make sure the VGA cable is plugged in all the way and screwed down. These units were made in 2002 so it may just be too old to go on. A repair would probably cost more than a new or used flat screen LCD.
USB ports are located on the back and also on the front on newer desktop PCs. These are on the computer tower - not the monitor as your posting is categorized. They are rectangular slots with four copper contacts inside.
try to get a second monitor that you know works and plug it into the computer. This will tell you if it is the monitor or the connection to the computer. If everything appears ok with the new monitor then you have to get a new one which is probably the case
Sorry for the news. Next time there is a big thunderstorm unplug everything and make sure that your computer is plugged into a surge protector at all times. This will save a lot of money and headaches
What has happened is the automatic screen size & resolution detection circuitry is going/gone faulty. You usually hear this sound ONLY when ya change screen resolutions, ie: when say ya change from 800x600 to 1024x768 or the like.
With 2nd monitors so inexpensive these days repair is often NOT warranted.. so perhaps it is time to upgrade to another. However if ya choose to have it repaired obtain a "Quote" and an explanation B4 ya proceed.
