I don't see a Brother HL-1400 on their site. However, there is an HL-1440 which uses the TN-430 (regular) or TN-460 (high yield) toner cartridges. This printer also takes the DR-400 drum unit.
This toner cartridge works with several models in the HL-1400 series, including the HL-1435, HL-1440, HL-1450 and HL-1470N.

did you try uninstalling the software through Add/Remove programs in Control Panel? You can also run system restore back to a time before you installed program.
