Sounds like the electronics have gone haywire. See of there is a factory reset on unit. Or try a hard reset and see what happens.

SOURCE: Stuck in self check mode

Manually pull down the front shield, then somewhat forcefully pull down the inner shield and maybe two little white pins so the tray is exposed with nothing blocking it. Have someone plug the machine in while you are holding everything out of the way and the tray should start to open. Pull your fingers out quickly so you don't block the tray from sliding out.

SOURCE: DVD recorder DMR-E55

You can try a factory reset (reboot). Here are the steps..

The following will set your recorder to the Factory defaults.
(Will not format HD on DMRE80).

With power off (stand-by mode/CLOCK DISPLAY SHOWING):

1)Press and hold [skip reverse] [Time Slip] [Eject] buttons for about 10 sec
2)Display will show 'L1 TEST'
3)Now power off DURING TEST
4)Clock should be fashing 12:00
5)Turn power on and language menu will be displayed on TV

Use for
DMRE50
DMRE55
DMRE85
For the DMRE75V press both [dub] buttons and [eject].

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Panasonic DMR-ES45V - DVD recorder / VCR combo Remote not workin

My remote is not working. When I press a button, I get the following message on my unit: U12, U30, SET #, CHK REMOTE #, or RC #. What can I do to fix this? The message displayed means that the remote control and unit are not communicating and the remote needs to be programmed. To program the remote, press and hold the same number that is displaying on the unit and the [ENTER] or [OK] button for more than 2 seconds. For example, if the unit displays “SET 2”, press and hold [2] and [ENTER] or [OK] for more than 2 seconds.

Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD recorder startup failure

The unit failed during self check, probably the power regulation board. A check by a qualified TV/VCR repair person is in order.

Recorder self-check... after inserting a disc.

Inserting a disk OTHER than Panasonic will cause a system crash. I'm betting Panasonic has code that causes this so you don't use cheaper generic DVDs. I now have to mail order the Panasonic DVDs (since nobody carries them) and have never had a crash since!

Self check

Please be a bit more specific if you can. In what way is it repeating itself? And once it comes on does it stay on? It could be a component faulty on the power supply side.
