PROTECT display indicates that receiver got serious problem in output amplifier section and protection mode is activated to avoid further damage. Output amplifier section should be tested by qualified technician to find out and replace defective part(s) to solve this issue. Local repair shop will do this job as it is not user level repair. This can be shorted output transistors (common) or a defective voltage amplifier IC. WIthout taking measurements inside, there is no way for me to make that determination. In any case, this should be a relatively simple repair for a shop that repairs audio gear. Expect a parts cost in the $25-$40 range.
Your amplifier should "downgrade" the signal to 5.1, even if the disc isn't using it. It is most likely a setting on your amp that may need adjusting for "types" of digital to accept on its input. If you can, set your optical input on your amp to "auto". This way it will automatically detect and switch for the proper incoming audio feed
You should have access to receiver's format from remote or front panel. If the unit was moved around a lot and for a long period, the micro-processor may have locked due to ambient static electricity. Try unplugging unit for seversl hours, then re-try
