Sure ... be sure to use a tripod or other device to place the camera for stability.

  • Set the MODE DIAL to your desired photo setting
  • Press the SELF-TIMER button on the button pad (looks like a clock/timer on the right button pad)
  • There are three settings
    • 10 SEC - 10 seconds will pass until the picture is taken
    • 2 SEC - 2 seconds until the picture is taken
    • Double self-timer - a picture will be taken after 10 seconds, and then after 2 seconds a second picture will be taken.
  • Press the SHUTTER button to begin the timer.
  • Jump in the shot! =)

Wondering if you could take a delayed picture with a canon powershot A 540, would like to set it so I can get the whole family in the picture

Press the FUNC/SET button. Use up/down to select Drive Mode (the rectangle, third item from the top). Use left/right to select the desired delay and press FUNC/SET. Start the self-timer by pressing the shutter release button as usual.

I want to have the camera take a pic of my family on its own

Yes. You can even choose between 2 seconds and 10 seconds. Put the people in the shot. Focus the camera on them by holding the shutter button down halfway, and without releasing the shutter button, press the button all the way down to start the self-timer. (That's what the manual says. I go into the menu on the camera and set it up that way.) To do it from the menu: when the camera is on, hit the menu/ok key. The self-timer mode will pop up. Hit the right arrow. Here you can choose between the 2 and 10 second timer options. Select one. The timer won't start until you have pressed the shutter button halfway to focus and press the shutter button all the way down as stated earlier.

With the camera on automatic it won't click, I get an r11 message.

I have the same problem - tried formatting the memory card but that didn't help.  I removed the lens and put it back on and that immediately fixed the problem.  I'm wondering if I somehow pushed a button and moved the lens enough for the camera to think it wasn't on correctly?  Anyway this seems to have solved the problem for now.  Now lets see if it lasts.

Taking a photo of the family, delaying the camera until I can get into the shot.

Sure, follow these steps...
  • Set everyone in an even composition, close together, maybe some standing, some sitting, whatever strikes you as a good picture.
  • Put the camera on a tripod or other tall article
  • Press the Mountain/Macro/Timer button until the (clock/timer) icon is displayed on the viewer. The button to press is just above the MF (Manual Focus letters)
  • Press the shutter button all the way down to activate the timer.
    • Press once for ten-second delay
    • Press twice for three-second delay
    • Press a third time to stop the timer
  • Jump into the shot! =)
The lamp next to the lens will start to blink and continue until one second before the picture is taken. The lamp will then stay solid during the last second to warn about the picture being taken.
