This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
Two things to check.
1. If, instead of manually turning the dial, try lifting and lowering the lid. Sometimes, The washer won't go into the spin cycle if the lid is open. If the Lid Switch is loose or broken it's a relatively easy fix.
2. It could be the timer / timer motor itself.

This is the deal, your washer is way to old to fix. The board is going bad and that is why it will not cycle properly. It would cost about $150.00 to fix and that does not even include labor. Consider craigslist as you can find some great deals from 40-60 for a newer one. Hope this helps.
