Hi
I have a problem with my HP 4100n. When I try to print I
am getting the message...tray 1 load plain letter. I have tried a cold re-set, have checked printer preferences on PC and have got those on LETTER (following an answer on your problem page to someone elses problem) but STILL I cannot get the printer to
automatically take from tray 2 or 3.
Orange light keeps flashing too. Any ideas? I would be most grateful! :-)
Thanks
Linda
Linda,
On printer check media/paper type tray 2 or 3 is plain and tray 2/3 is set for letter paper size too, via printer control panel. Also check under paper handling other options for tray 1, also on tray 2 and 3, I think there is a blue little round switch on left should be set as letter not custom.
Some paper types cannot be feed from anywhere else but tray1/bypass ie labels/laminate/card stock.
Check print driver on pc has tray 3 option installed and is not set as default to print to manual bypass/tray 1
light flashing cause printer wants paper type/size that it "thinks" it hasn't got in tray 2/3
If that dont cover it...post back

Dell 4100cn Color Laser Printer Error 024-965 - Load Tray 1
Cause:
The "Paper Tray Inserted" sensor buttons are not being depressed by the Paper Tray so the Printer thinks no Tray is inserted even if the Tray is properly inserted.
If you pull out the paper tray and look at the Paper Tray opening, you will see three white vertical sensor buttons along the left-hand side at the mouth of the aperture where the paper tray slides in. These three white vertically aligned push button sensors tell the printer that the Paper Tray is inserted when the paper Tray is
properly pushed all the way in and aligned. It also signals to the printer by noting which button is depressed whether the tray is a Letter Size or Legal Size tray that has been inserted. These buttons which are fully visible as soon as the tray is slid out can move out of place and even fall into the wall of the Tray slot preventing the buttons from sensing the tray.
Solution:
Click it back into place. There should be no play and the buttons themselves should be the only thing that move and then only in an in and out manner. They should move out toward you when the Tray is removed and be pushed in when the tray in slid into the paper tray feedering slot. A pair of needle-nose pliers may be necessary to draw the button module out of the tray slot wall if it has fallen in. Once it is STIFFLY repositioned and the Paper Tray reinserted, reset the printer by opening and quickly reshutting the printer cartridge compartment. This action will recalibrate the printer, shut off the amber error light and resume the current printing job if one was in progress.
Good luck!
Hello Linda,
The most common problem with the 4000 and 4100 series printers is the fact that the paper trays have a hard time maintaining the physical paper backstop, it will move out of place and therefore change the printer's paper size settings, most likely shifting into the A4 size. Please make sure the backstop is locked into the "LETTER" position, then reload the paper back into the tray. The tray 1 error appears because the printer can't find any Letter size paper in the trays. Once you fix the tray #2 and /or tray #3 issue the error message about tray 1 will go away!
Good Luck!

All i did was go to printers and printer preferences and made it print from tray 2 manually and tell it to print plain paper.
