Auto zooming on power up, intermittent problem

I bought my Panasonic Lumix FZ28 in November 2008. it has been fine until recently (2 weeks ago)... the fault is intemittent, and I cannot "force" the fault to appear....
Fault 1 on power up, the lens zooms out to max zoom (including digital), and the zoom lever does not function.(no other buttons on camera function)
Fault 2, similar to fault 1, power up, camera works normally, for a while, then zooms automatically to full zoom, sometimes zooms back to zero zoom, change from rec to display, and back to rec, sometimes rectifies it,
Fault 3, Power on, using camera, press Menu, to change settings, but menu on screen just scrolls (happened only once) but nothing will stop it going through all pages of all menu repeatedly.

friend has given me instructions from Service Manual for FZ18 to get error codes.... most common error code is 18000530 with a 18000930, and a 18000130, but these do not tie up with the error code list.

Possibly a intermittent connection in the control buttons or the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector from the controls to the main PCB.
Take it in for servicing, they will do a trial by substitution (swap out control) and lubricate the connector.
There isn't really anything you can do to fix with this sort of problem.

Cheers.

I have this problem too, but only when I try to view pictures I have taken on a later model. Photos taken with the FZ28 view as per normal.

Why does my Panasonic DMCFZ28 take pictures when I push the zoom lever?

Hi,
I suspect the snap key is shot circuited, use contact cleaner spray in the click button often press it to get ride of possible carbon shot circuit between the switch. in some cases the processor will malfunction, and if moisture or water particles gone inside, you must open the cam and clean the motherboard thoroughly with PCB cleaning agent.

The zoom wheel does not stop when I want it to. It like it has its "own" will... Once I start zooming it goes all the way until the max. Sometimes when I make it (somehow... I don't know how)...

Hello.

It sounds like your camera's lens is broken. Did you accidentally drop it? When you shake your camera, do you hear something moving inside? Like a loose part? Or looking in the lens do see anything amiss?

Lumix Panasonic DMC FZ28 18x optical zoom, 27mm wide pix always out of focus... what could be the problem? thanks!

Does it make 2 beeps and have a green spot in the center of viewfinder/lcd? if so it is thinking it is focused, test this to see. If it is 2 beeps but definitely out of focus, it will need to go in for a back-focus alignment. Simple operation for the repair team.

When using the zoom button the cam stops working

This suggests the zoom motor has failed. As you only purchased it 2 weeks ago - it should be replaced under warranty
