I have an old school "Royal Quiet Deluxe" typewriter; the carriage will not move when the letter keys are pressed or when the space bar is pressed but will move to back space or to slide the carriage back and forth. Ican't figure out how to get the carriage to move when I type. Help! Beverly

It is hard to tell what is causing this but a few things to could be a loose universal bar, the trip adjustment, or something foreign in the typewriter stopping the movement of those keys

Use your space bar to move carrier to desired location, hold down Alt key button on bottom left (next to space bar) and press the number 5 numeric key on top row. That should set your right margin.

It's either in the carriage lock position, just check if it's locked in place.
The other reason may be that the return spring has broken. Easy to replace & is repairable sometimes.

There is a carriage shifting screw on both sides of the typewriter. You will recognize this because it is a screw that has a big bump head with felt on it. It is being hit when you hit that shift lever. You will have to loosen the securing nut first before adjusting.

Try pressing and holding the MR key and use the space bar then reset the right margin

Does the carriage just move back and forth on its own? Space bar work? The escapement may be sticky from lack of use. You may be able to see it from the upper rear or the bottom. It will move when you hit space bar or keys. Try working WD40 into it, it'll take a bit of use to free.

I just have an underwood 18 typewriter and when I type the carriage doesnt move the margins are in the end and when I press the tab key It is moving but if press the space bar it doesnt move..what should I do?

You have to hold the magic margin button down while you move the carriage all the way to the left, then release the margin button. Then repeat for thr right margin. Hold the right magic margin button down while moving the carriage all the way to the right, then release the margin button.
