Dell Tec told me to choose "To set up Windows XP now" (with Operating System CD in drive) If it doesn't work try Dell Tech Chat. I kept getting "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file." (I tried to restore to original factory, followed directions, f12 boot from CD but when I get to "Agree to Licensing Agreement" none of the keys work except ESC.) I was able to get on the Dell Tech Chat at http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/chat/hardware_chat?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs (you need your Service Tag) tried same steps but keys would not work so they sent me a new hard drive that I can install myself. Evidently there is no way to fix this. Tech says wireless will work with new hard drive. Is your warranty active? I always get SquareTrade.com (cheaper than most) warranty. They fix or give you what you paid. Everything I buy breaks & sooner than you would think.

Resetting a Dell Inspiron to the factory settings allows the user to restore the Dell Inspiron to the original operating condition as if it was just taken out of the box. How do a complete factory restore on dell inspiron 1525 when after f8 it says unable to locate file?

Dell.com supply "rescue disks" as do many sites on the net. I think that is possibly the only way to go.
Errors on the hard drive possibly caused the error in the file system, or the master file table has been corrupted.
Hope it helps.

I would like to reset my laptop to its factory settings but dont know how. I tried F8 key and also F11 CTRL but nothings seems to work. Its a Dell ispiron 1525.

Hi,
To restore your laptop back to factory defaults you will need the restore cds that were supplied with your laptop.
Insert the cd (or the firs if is more than one) and restart your laptop.
When the message appears "Press any key to boot from cd" press enter and follow the wizard to reinstall the operating system and restore your laptop.
Please note that you should backup any data that you would like to keep before the above procedure.

I have a dell insiron 1525. I have been trying to

The restoration is more than likely corrupt. The best solution is to find another restore point, or abort restoration. If your computer fails with an error, you'd either: a. Have brought a backup, 'cause you're reformatting. b. Have a Linux LiveCD or dual-boot OS ready if you REALLY need some files from that computer. Go ask about those on a different question if you need to use them and are confused.
