Heater element or defrost thermostat sounds right

i have a top freezer not a side by side but i noticed ice build up towards the bottom right corner of the back panel (in freezer)....i diconnected power...took the back panel off .....fan had frost on it....coil was iced up.... then on the back of the refrigerator i accessed the control board....plugged the power back on ...i jumped the line to the heater...heater didnt work....then checked resistance through the heater (checked ok)....

it came down to me replacing the defrost thermostat which is in series with the heater....defrost now works fine ...which is every 60hrs for 45 minutes on mine.

The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

Side by side refrigerator will not cool on refrigerator side plus a build of ice temp control, model # psb2151grw

It sounds like your freezers' evaporator coils are not defrosting normally. At least once a day ,a refrigerator automatically defrosts the coils in the rear of the freezer compartment. In most cases ,the electric heater that is activated by a timer circuit, comes on and melts any ice buildup .If that heater doesn't come on for several days, the ice builds up into a solid block, and it doesnt allow any air to pass thru to the refrigerator side of you box.

My 5 year old GE GSH22JSRSS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator recently stopped cooling. I noticed a build up of frost on the freezer, so unplugged the fridge and let the ice melt away. After this,...

The problem you describe is that your defrost circuit has failed. The fridge should stop the compressor periodically and turn on the defrost heater to melt the frost buildup. Since the frost in building up on your coils, the fan can't blow the cold air into the fridge compartment. It defrost is controlled by a module that turns on the heater. Most of these failures have to do with the defrost heating element burning out. It can be replaced by someone who has some mechanical ability.

The coil and heater is located in the back of the freezer compartment behind the panel in the back. You can obtain parts from appliance repair outlet or online like appliancepartspros.com or repairclinic.com.

The freezer side is working but no cold temperature in the fridge section of our side by side door with water and ice dispenser kitchaid fridge. Wonder what the problem is?

Hi
If the refrigerator is in defrosting mode, the freezer compartment temperature will be less cold than usual. Wait 20 minutes, and you should be able to feel cold air blowing in the bottom of the compartment. If you have frost on the freezer coil, you probably have a defrost problem. Your freezer should go into a defrost cycle about twice a day. When this happens the compressor and fans shut off and a defrost heater in the freezer coil will turn on heating away the ice. This usually last 10 - 20 minutes. If the defrost coil doesn't defrost it will become a solid block of ice and this will in turn block the air from blowing into your refrigerator compartment. There are several things that can go wrong with the defrost cycle such as the defrost timer, defrost heater, or the defrost termination thermostat.

Roper On top freezer.. Developing ice on internal coils.. how do I know if its the auto heater or the thermastate? does not appear to auto defrost..? ice build up in the freezer compartment...

use an ohmmeter to check the heater element after disconnecting the power to the unit and removing at least one connection from the element, then check for continuity if its good then its more than likely its the defrost control or a bad connection in a wire connection

Freezer loses cooling ability and everything thaws

open up the freezer panel inside the freezer compartment back wall area and check the evaporator coil,if it has a heavy amount of ice on it you need to use a hair dryer to melt this build-up,then you need to test the defrost heater element below this to see if its bad,if not then the defrost heater control be it timed or adaptive could be bad,

Ice build-up in lower freezer. We replaces the

warm between doors is normal. if hot then clean coils and if coils clean make sure condenser fan motor working thats the fan in the back compartment, however if warm thats good. did the evaporator coil freeze from top to btm is that why u replaced heater. if it was then could be heater,if the coil is only getting frost on half the coil, you could have a sealed system problem. is the evaporator motor working in the frz side if not, then that could be the problem.if coil is froze up it needs to be defrosted. did you defrost coil when you replaced heater,if not try defrosting coils and then wait about 12 hrs and see how it does.

Ice build up in freezer

Defrost system failure.

Defrost timer, heater, therma disk, any one could be bad.

You could manually defrost and this would get the Ref back to working for a couple of days before it iced up again. Remember there is a lot of ice build up on the cooling coils in the freezer that you can't see so, a little extra time with a hair dryer is needed to do a complete manual defrost.

Ice is forming around fan in back of freezer compartment

The defrost system is not doing it's job. I bet if you took the panel off below the fan you will see more ice on the cooling coils. There should be a light coat of frost on the coils but not a heavy ice build up. There is a heating element at the bottom area of these coils which should be defrosting all this ice.

1. A defrost timer turns this heating element on.

2. The heating element melts the ice.

3. A thermo disc attached to the coils will turn the heater off.

One or more of these are not doing it's job.
