There are few thing you ahve to keep in mind

there are two type of hard disk
1. IDE
2. SATA

As per your hdd capacity it should of IDE type.

Now there are two IDE slots on motherboard. One is Primary and other is Secondary

You can fix two hdd with one IDE Slot that mean you can fix up upto faour IDE hdd at a time

Now again there are Primary master and Primary Slave

and

Secondary Master and Secondary Slave

Now You have to examine what was the location of previous hdd
1 Primary Master
2 Primary Slave
3 Secondary Master
4 Secondary Slave.

Now you have to make a HDD master or Slave.

just in between data cable connector and power cable connector there is a jumper. that specify the master or slave. do reply me if it works well thanks

The unit won't turn on... fry's on 8-17-2010...tooo much info to loose this is the 2nd, time that i have used it

You can still save your information if you remove the actual hard drive from its enclosure.

Simple as opening the enclosure, remove the hard drive then use an external hard drive dock - here

A hard drive dock instructions are here. Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUrw9W3-FcA

and connect it to your computer for back up to a new hard drive.

A how-to can be found here. Youtube = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ_vjyvK28A

Let me know if this works.

Medion MIM2080 MD95408 Original 40gb hard drive has died. Purchased 80gb replacement. Have cloned WIN_XP_PRO from another device onto new hard drive. When laptop boots all you get is a black screen...

did you get all the files? most likely there is a corrupt or missing set of files in the cloned files
i suggest you either get a new hard copy (disks) and install from there or use linux (most linux OS's are free online)

Doesn't boot

The external storage device has several major components:
* USB cable
* external power-supply
* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.
Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Buy a new W.D. disk-drive through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

My 320gb external hard drive has stopped working. I have used it alot with my laptop, but i hadnt used it for about a month. when i plugged it in it said it needs to install device driver software, but it...

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

If the problem persists, either:

* the USB cable is damaged,

* inside the enclosure, the disk-drive is not functioning
(although the lamp indicates that it is getting electrical power)

* inside the enclosure, the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed.

If the warranty is still valid, W.D. will replace it, at no cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; buy a new unit from their web-site, and you can get a discount, as a previous customer.

Or, open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it is working at all.

Or, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and mount it into the enclosure, to make a "new" external disk-drive.

My WD external drive is plugged in, and my computer keeps saying that one of the usb devices has malfunction and is not being recognized. I have very important data on this drive. How can I fix this...

The problem may not be with the hard drive itself but with the interface between the drive and the USB port. The drives in most cases are fine if they have not been dropped or abused. The problem with external drives is usually the small circuit board that contains the sata to usb interface. Try purchasing another external hard drive enclosure and remove the drive from the enclosure you now have. There are guides on youtube to show you how to take one of those WD enclosures apart. Just install the hard drive in the new enclosure and load the driver files that come with the new enclosure. You should have a working external drive....as long as the hard drive has not failed.

IBM deskstar 120 GXP 40GB will only format to 22GB. Its an old drive setup in an external usb enclosure

sounds like you're trying to format with FAT 16 or 32 which limits the partition size.
Try formatting with NFS which has no limit on partition sizes

I have just removed a IBM Deskstar (DTLA-307015) from my desktop and installed into a external enclosure just turned it on and it worked without installing any drivers. I want to know is this set up right?...

since you said that the HDD works you have nothing nto worry, that means you have installed it correctly. as for clearing it up suggest you do a complete format. when you plug in the USB the pc will assign a drive name to it. note it down. the right click my computer/manage/disk managment(from the left panel) right click on the drive you noted down & format.
