Clothes left with grease smears

There are two real possibilities, both are in the washer. The first is
that the gear box seal is failing, and the second is that the fabric
softener dispenser needs to be dismantled and cleaned out.

"When the seal starts to fail, this oil floats up into the wash water
in the form of small black drops. The stains are almost impossible
to remove from clothing. Also, as the oil is leaking up, hot soapy
water is leaking down into the transmission, which will eventually
cause it to fail. As I recall, the seal wasn't difficult to replace,
but to get access to it I basically had to disassemble the whole
machine. The hardest part was pulling the agitator off the shaft - I
used a slide hammer puller. I'd start by pulling the agitator off and
see if you can access the transmission seal that way

The water turns brown. I have checked the hoses and detect no coloring.

You may have a tub seal leaking from transmission. Check out YouTube under washer leaking oil. You may see what the problem.

My Kenmore heavy duty tumble washer is leaving a light brown stain on white or light clothes. It is likely staining dark clothes but of course they are too dark to see a light stain. It is definitely...

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

My Whirlpool washer LA768M leaks water during the cycle.

Hi, it does sound like a pump but, you should not have oil with it. Tip the washer back against the wall and look underneath to see if there is transmission fluid/oil leaking.
Please let me know and I can assist you with changing the pump.

Thanks

Spin cycle does not work; I can open lid and push

There is likely a problem with the clutch, or transmission, or both. A quick check would be to LEAN (don't lay the machine on it's back) the washer back, and check for oil spray on the inside of the cabinet walls, or just a puddle of oil underneath. If there is oil, the transmission will need replaced, along with the clutch. When the oil leaks out, it tends to get into the clutch band and cause slipping, (clutch may look brown from heat, should be shiny) which is why you have to give it a boost with your hand. hope that helps some.

Brown goo in top loading washer

I had exactly the same problem a few years ago. I thought it was a leak from an oil seal and had technicians out. The problem was that I used the wrong washing powder. Find out from the manufacturer what washing powder you need to use and use only that.

Oil inside drum

Sometimes if your transmission is leaking oil it can creep inside the tub, tilt the machine back if you see oil underneath it then you"ll know if you have a leaking transmission.
