Probable failed power supply.
If you look at the screen on an angle after your system has finished booting and see faint images, it is the backlight or is associated high voltage power supply that has failed.
If you see no 'shadows' at all, then the main supply has failed.
Either one of these could be a separate supply since many manufacturers buy from specialized companies.

Unfortunately, your monitor's probably gone - very well known problem with Gateways's monitors/TVs.
Usually, trying fixing a monitor doesn't really worth it and it's better buying a new one, BUT this company would repair your monitor for $98, as reported on this blog.
If you're looking for a "do-it-yourself-solution", kindly take a look at this. As USUALLY the problem is with the capacitors, I guess you'll find there all the information needed!
