PC turns off by itself when I insert USB stick/USB HD
Hi, lately my PC turns off by itself when I insert a USB stick or attach an external USB HD. Any idea what is causing this and how to stop it ? Thanks. ElCid.

If you just want to format the hd the are some options 1 - remove it & attach it to another pc as an external hd via hd usb adapter, shell then format 2 - boot via bootable usb flash, cd, dv, fd with utility files then format
Always worth a go, but probably you will need to attach the HD to another pc.
There a a couple of ways to do this.
1 open pc remove HD and attach to the other pc
2 remove HD and fit it into an external hard drive enclosure
or finaly there are usb hard drive docks that you just push your hard drive in.
I do not know if the 1 Tb external hard will work on the USB ports on the LCD TVs.
What do you want to store on the 1 Tb USB hard drive and display on the LCD TVs?
Most LCD TVs can access USB memory sticks and display DVI movies (if supported by the TV), photos etc. that are stored on these USB memory sticks.
Try inserting an USB hard drive (borrow one if necessary, can be any capacity) into the USB port to see if it works before you decide to purchase a 1 Tb USB hard drive.
My suggestion would be to purchase a 1 Tb USB memory stick. This would out perform an external USB hard drive.
When the drive is not recognized, try going to start->control panel->administrative tools->computer management->disk management and see if the drive is recognized by it, if so try assigning a drive letter then exploring it
This could be a problem with the external attachment, but it sounds more like a compatiblilty issue with Vista. Check the compatibility of the devices and their drivers, and get back to me.
Hi,
Unless you can use external power to the usb 2.0 pcmcia card, a CF-27 probly won't handle the load.
Their power adapters are only 15V and the unit itself is a P2 433 at best. It's just pulling too much power.
Sorry
Good luck
Hi,
This is a common problem with external storage.
Based on your post/description:
1. Your laptop does not recognize the external hard drive via its USB connection - try on a different computer - if it is still a no go, then it's not a PC problem;
2. Try replacing the cable - again if a no go, so it's not an interface/cable problem;
3. That leaves you only with the PS3200 itself as the possible at fault.
An external hardrive would consist of 2 main parts, the electronic board and the hard disk itself. The board seldom (if ever) fails. Its function is to provide conversion/interface from the SATA/IDE connectors of the HD to the out USB/Firewire. The HD more often than not fails. Most external storage uses a standard HD inside the enclosure.
Your possible options:
a. Claim warranty/replacement;
b. Replace the HD only;
c. Physically remove the HD and connect it directly inside a desktop either as IDE or SATA and run manufacturer's diagnostic and/or third party
recovery software;
d. Seek services of professional data recovery firms (if data/files are mission critical);
Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need further information.
Good luck and kind regards.
