My kenmore direct drive Mod. 70. will spin and drain, but will not agitate. The coupler was broke and replaced. when put back together it will spin, but not agitate. When calling for agitate, the motor hums and lights dim. We tested all the switches and they seem fine. Thanks.
Video was great...but. I need to know if my motor is bad, or the transmission. Thank you!!Video was great...but. I need to know if my motor is bad, or the transmission. Thank you!!

The humming sound is coming from the drive motor running but unable to drive the agitator nor the basket to spin. The drive motor is definitely running as the drain function works because of the fact that drain pump is directly coupled with the rear spline of the motor. The drain pump works in either direction as long as the motor runs. The problem is obviously a broken motor coupler which transfers the mechanical energy of the motor to the transmission. The solution then is to replace the broken coupler. Click on the link below for the detailed step-by-step procedure in replacing the motor coupler.
I recently had this problem. It was found that the main drive belt broke and the washer would fill but not spin, agitate or drain. I replaced the belt and everything worked again. A defective or disconnected cover switch would also cause the same problem.
HI, Even tho it drains ok, does it spin? If it doesn't spin or agitate, it could be the coupler that attachec the transmission to the motor. The agitator is ok, it is designed to work that way. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
When this machine is not spinning, the water should still be able to drain, as the motor drives the pump on the same shaft as the coupler for the tranny. Set to the spin setting and depress the lid switch, if the water still does not drain, you may have something stuck in your pump, which would also lock the motor shaft and not allow it to spin or agitate. If the water does drain, check the motor coupler, which is located between the motor and transmission, if broken, the motor will run but there is no drive to the transmission. Hope this helps...
