1) With direct connect with modem, check the IP address and default gateway.
(I came across such a modem, it gave default gateway as 192.168.1.254)
I also had the doubt of configuring as a dynamic connection
But it won't work!
Contact your ISP to completely bridge the modem and configure the dsl modem as PPPoE connection with correct username and password.
Finally connect the modem to router and do a complete network power cycle, i.e.: Unplug power from router 1st, then power from modem, unplug the telephone line and now do the exact reverse process... Plug back the tel. cable, then power to modem... now WAIT for lights on modem to come back, then plug in the power to router. This will surely work.

Every time i hook up the wireless router to the dsl router it doesnt find the internet ( its is a embarq 660 series dsl router and i have a belkin N1 wireless router)

the problem you are facing is due to the double nat issue(the embarq modem provides the ip address in the range of belkin router, that is 192.168.2.1)...hardwire the pc to the lan port of router.
login to the router setup page(type 192.168.2.1 in IE)
in router setup page, click on lan settings and change your lan ip to 192.168.5.1....the problem ll get resolved...if still the status is not connected, switch off the router and modem and switch on it after a minute....it ll get fixed

Im trying hook up a wireless router and it ask what kind of conection I have static ip ect... How do I know what I have? Im using DSL.

Most residential subscriber services use dynamic IP addressing. Dynamic IP addressing is automatic from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Linksys home based products such as the one you have should be setup up for this configuration out of the box by default, and require no adjustments to the IP configuration of the wireless router.

You should power down the DSL modem and Linksys, then connect them, then reapply power. This will clear the DSL modem if it was connected to another device such as a PC. This is important as most cable and DSL modems use something called MAC address binding that will only allow one device to connect to it directly at a time.

So if you connect the computer directly to the modem , it works .
That means your modem is working properly. Your ISP is DSL connection. Now connect the modem to the router and the computer to the router. Open the router xet up page and change the settings of the router according to the type of connection you have.
There are 2 types of connection in DSL.
DHCP and PPPOE .

Switched from DSL modem to Cable modem. Linksys

If you had your linksys router controlling the DSL connection, it was most likely a PPPoe connection requiring a username and password. Most cable companies have dynamic IP address and do not require a username or password.

Open your internet browser, IE, Firefox etc and go to 192.168.1.1 >
Enter your router username and password, typically admin and admin

In the setup tab, change your connection FROM whatever is listed there and make sure it is Autumatic DHCP Save your settings, and restart the router.

You should be fine.

I am trying to configure my netgear router to work with my dsl motorola modem

You can access your wireless router by first running you ethernet cable from pc to wireless, then in address bar, type 192.168.1.1 and this will enter the wireless router's software. If it asks for username and password, try typing admin for both.

To configure your router for Cable you will need to set your router's WAN (INTERNET) port to 'Dynamic IP' (DHCP) option. The router is set to this option by default.

Configuration steps:

Step 1 Connect the cable modem to the WAN (INTERNET) port of your router. If the modem has USB connection make sure that it is NOT connected to any computers via the USB cable and that the modem is switched to Ethernet (not USB). Only the modem's Ethernet port should be connected to the router's WAN (INTERNET) port.
Connect your computer(s) to the router's LAN port(s) or establish connection to it wirelessly.

Step 2 Open your Internet Explorer and log into your router by typing in its IP address (in most cases the default IP is http://192.168.2.1 ). Note that you do not have to be on the Internet in order to access this address because you are just connecting to your router's address. Specify username and password for your router, default is `admin' and password is password.

Step 3 After logging into the router select Setup. Set Internet Connection to 'Dynamic IP (DHCP)' option.

Step 4 Click on SAVE SETTINGS and then on REBOOT THE DEVICE to apply the new configuration.

If you are having difficulties accessing the Internet, you need to:

- Select the MAC Cloning option. Click on Clone MAC Address button. Do this from the computer which the cable modem was directly connected the last time. This will place the MAC address of your computer into the router. Save settings and reboot the router. Reboot your cable modem as well.

- Log into the router and go to Status page. Note what IP address it is getting on the WAN (INTERNET) interface. If the IP address you see under WAN (INTERNET) appears to be in the same range you are using on your network (e.g. 192.168.2.x), you will need to change the range you are using on your LAN to something different, e.g. 192.168.88.x. You can do this on your router under Setup > LAN Setup. Note that after changing the IP of your router you will only be able to access it through its new IP, e.g. 192.168.88.1.

- Uninstall your antivirus/firewall software (sometimes disabling or closing the software is not enough) and reboot your PC. After establishing the Internet connection through the router, reinstall your antivirus/firewall software.

Belkin Wireless N router/Embarq 660 modem/No internet

Make sure your physical connection is correct. From the modem, the ethernet cable should plugged in to the Internet/WAN port of the router. And your computer to port 1. Access the setup page of the router again and Enable the MAC Address Clone setting. Clone the MAC Address of your PC there then power cycle the router and modem. You should be all set.

Setting up a wireless router

first you have to check the ip address of the dsl modem you used and see to it that it is not the same ip address of the router to avoid conflict. the default ip address of dlink router is 192.168.0.1.if in case your dsl modem has the same ip address with the router, you have to change firs the ip address of the router before connecting the router to your dsl modem.
next you need to know your internet connection whether it is DYNAMIC or PPPOE, depending on how your internet provider configured your modem. for PPPOE connection, you have to know the USERNAME and PASSWORD that your provider provides you.
good luck.

Connected??

The best thing to do would be to contact your Internet provider to be sure. There are a couple things you can check on your own that can help you determine this. When you use your DSL or Cable modem without the Router how does it work? Do you not have to assign any IP addresses or DNS settings to get it working? If so, that is a Dynamic IP Address setup. If you have go to into the TCP/IP settings and specify the IP address and the DNS settings that is a Static IP Address setup. If you have to click on an icon that goes through a connection process that uses a User name and Password, that is a PPPoE IP address setup. Once you are able to determine that you should be able to follow the instructions in the user manual.
