Five blinks is a video abnormality detection and I am all too familiar with this repair... One or more of the crt's in this unit has a bad set or failing guns in it... You can have a local tech bring out a crt tester and rejuvenate the tube for a temporary stay but it will eventually fail for good and in a short period of time it will be one or the other - - VERY expensive to repair or off to the dump...

My belief is that is why you'll find ones so cheap... I don't waste my time here in the shop to put used parts in a customer's unit. Most often it will just lead to further grief and then you have twice as much to throw away.
Holidays are quickly approaching get out the Consumer Reports and strart researching a new investment. If that isn't possible call a few shops and find out what they have in used units and what guarantee they offer...
Good Luck!

Would it be worthwhile to buy another used one and piece them together? Used ones are going for $100-500, or, is this such a common problem that most Sonys this age (7 yrs) are prone to this problem.
Can't afford new 61", this one was $3000. Can it be repaired for <$1000 and get another 5-7 yrs out of it?
