When I try to make a picture the camera wont releae the shutter. This is a new Problem and I cant figure out why its happening because the camera is well maintained.

1. Turn off the camera. 2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card. 3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes. 4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera. 5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. Does the "ERR ' message appear? If it does, then the camera should be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps: 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Insert the CF card. 3. Turn on the camera. 4. Format the CF card in the camera. 5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. Does the "ERR ' message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most likely source of the issue. Try using a different card. If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps: 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body. 3. Reattach your lens. 4. Turn on the camera. 5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. If the "ERR ' message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician. If you see the "ERR ' with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera should be serviced.

The battery is fully charged when the charge lamp on the back just under the shutter releaes button stops blinking green and goes off.

Hello - I figured it out. I had the exact same problem. The shutter failed and it had to be fixed by Canon. Apparently that happens after the shutter fires so many times (like a click-count on a printer). I just got my camera back and it's doing awesome now.

This may sound silly, but did you check the shutter on the end of the lens when the camera is on to make sure that the shutter is open? Sometimes some dirt or sand can get into the lens barrel and make the shutter get stuck in the closed position. If this happens, gently open the shutter with a a toothpick or something (NOT your finger because of the oils and NOT something that will scratch the lens).

If the shutter is open and the pictures turn out black both on the camera's LCD and on the computer once you download them, then I'm guessing something happened to your CCD, which is the tiny electronic chip that records the light coming through the lens. Either something inside the camera has fallen in front of the CCD and is blocking the light (unlikely) or the CCD chip has died. If that's the case, I hate to say it but buying a new camera would be more cost effective (and probably cheaper) than getting it fixed.

Preliminary searching leads me to believe that this camera won't take anything larger than a 1GB memory card.

Possibility one : lens unit faulty and proper focus is not being achieved camera goes into error mode because of this and then it switches off to prevent further damage.( replace /repair lens unit ) Possibility two: shutter faulty . Lens delivers proper focus but when you try to take picture goes into error mode because shutter not coming on line or malfanctions. ( replace shutter only ).

I need more information about what symptoms you are experiencing. I am going to guess that your shutter is stuck closed. This would cause a blank image to show on the view screen and your captured pictures. The regular icons and text would still display normally. Is this what you are seeing? The shutter button features a two-stage action. Pressing Halfway Pressing halfway automatically sets the exposure, focus and white balance.
The indicators light or blink as follows.
Upper Indicator
" Green: Metering complete (two beeps sound)
" Orange: Flash will fire
" Blinking Orange: Camera shake warning / Insufficient exposure
Lower Indicator
" Yellow: Macro Mode / Manual Focus
" Blinking Yellow: Focusing difficulty* (single beep sounds)
* When the indicator blinks yellow, lock the focus before shooting.
