I picked it up one day and it was cracked, probably by accident. I do not use the cover, so the problem wasn't in it. Is it covered by the standard warranty? or is there a repair service I can use? if there is, how much do you think it will cost?
Amazon should replace it for you if you're under warranty. If all attempts trying to get the screen replaced through Amazon fail, you can get the part at Kindle Repair and there is a guide that shows you how to open a kindle and install parts at Kindle Repair Guide.
Amazon is aware that there is a problem with fragility of the screens on the Kindles. At first, they were getting a LOT of criticism for stonewalling on this issue, then they turned around 180 degrees and decided "the customer is right." If you email customer support through the Amazon website, they may offer to replace your entire unit for free (they did for me). They ship you a new Kindle, and you use the packaging and enclosed label to send the broken unit back so they can "study it and see what went wrong." If you have personal documents (e.g. PDF files) you'll need to store them on your computer before sending the unit back. For books bought through Amazon, though, they will automatically download them to your new Kindle when you register it.
