Tiller goes For./Rev. but wont drive forward with tines engaged
MTD 420 Series Tiller, Chain drive, Counter Rotating Tines. Tiller moves Forward and Reverse without Tines engaged. When shifted to Tines the Tines engage but the tiller will not drive Forward.
Figured it out. Key is one long key extending from clutch collar to reverse engagement gear. End of Key near reverse engagement gear was worn and slipping. Replaced key to fix. Figured it out. Transmission/differential. Perhaps the unit sat for 4 years because the tines would not turn and your replacement engine has not solved the real problem. I'd say disassemble the chain case to discover what's locking the tine drive.
You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.
I had similar problem recently with 2007 Huskee MTD series 410. The shift assembly bent and couldn't move the clutch collar all the way over on the drive shaft.
the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft
* CRT or SRT -- These are two terms you will see on rear-tine tillers only.
o Counter Rotating Tines are best for heavier duty jobs and for breaking new ground.
o Standard Rotating Tines are good for aerating the soil and help propel the tiller forward.
