A light engine is NOT the reason for a short bulb life. Most likely, you have a "generic" bulb and these will NOT last in a Toshiba set. If not that--the ballast may be going bad--but I DOUBT it. Probably a cheap bulb!! Try a GENUINE Toshiba lamp first.

Wear gloves when changing the bulbs. Your body oils will cause the bulbs to burn extremely hot and burn out. Check your tail lights. Some vehicle's interior light goes out of stays on when your tail lights malfunction.
This vanity mirror uses (2) 9-watt fluorescent bulbs, which should last for the life of the product. The light is manufactured with the old-fashion preheat ballast tubes. In order to light the bulbs you must hold the "ON" switch DOWN for 5 to ten seconds then the lights light and you let go of the switch. As for changing the bulbs, I'm not familiar with this product, but if I had to guess, the clear plastic front covers over the bulbs probably just snap into place. Removing the covers should give access to the bulbs.
Halogen bulbs are a lot hotter than other bulbs and have a much shorter life span. It is the nature of the bulb. You can see about changing just the lighting fixture on the fan or look into getting an LED bulb, they run very cool compared to halogen and last forever.
If the power button is displaying the bulb fault indicator AND overheat indicator lights at the same time, it indicates a faulty cooling fan. The television is smart enough to detect when either of the two cooling fans in the chassis have failed, or aren't spinning fast enough. To prevent overheating and damage, the set will not turn on if a fan is faulty. You'll need a replacement fan.
The problem is an expensive one. The blue display has become distorted due to excessive heat overtime. The blue display is closest to the lamp and gets most of the heat. The Light Engine must be replaced by a repair shop to correct the problem.
LCD sets are backlit by a special color temperature fluorescent lamp assembly, usually built into the display itself and not replacable for most brands. There are no "light bulbs" to replace in flat panel units.
The failure you described is a serious one. A burning smell often means the main power supply or display buffer drives shorted somewhere. The display or lamp could also be shorted out (rare) , but you might find a damaged backlight power supply (not rare).
Just changing the affected board (s) may not be your only problem, as there could be shorts elsewhere that caused the failure to begin with. Proper power precautions are needed from blowing the new board the second you fire the set up.
Only thing I could recommend is find a FACTORY AUTHORIZED repair center and find out what's wrong. They would have quick access to parts and resources for engineering support directly from the manufacturer. It's best to find one with a reasonable estimate charge and make sure that charge is credited to your final bill should you decide to have it repaired.
Mine does the same thing and I just replaced the bulb after waiting almost 6 months and I purchased one directly from Radio Slack. It will turn on for about 10 seconds and then goes into shut down.....At three hundred dollars I can't see putting another bulb in, when this one has less than 50 hours on it.
Your problem could be dust or dirt on the lens inside the reflection cavity or the problem could be the light engine. If the problem is the light engine, thank god you have an extended warranty as the light engine alone cost somewhere around 1000 buck. Good Luck.
