If hard to push, only a few things to check:

(1) Rear wheels will get hair or thread wrapped around axles, dust, etc. and be hard to turn. Make sure each wheel turns easily.

(2) Small wheels on newer models (since about 1997-98) toward front are worn, missing or have same problem as item 1.

(3) Brush roll not turning. The brush roll actually helps pull this unit along the floor, as it rotates in the "forward" direction. If the belt broke, and you do not realize it, it may suddenly seem harder to push.

Why is my oreck xl 21 hard to push on carpet?

sometimes the little rubber wheels in front wear out of round and bind. Try those first (if they're the tiny ones you must buy a pack of 20 from oreck directly) and Orecks are known for being hard to push when bag begins to fill up.

Vacuum hard to move on carpet

The key to getting an Oreck to move or push is to use as low and angle of the handle as possible. The more upright the handle, the harder the machine is to push (move). The lower the angle or the closer the handle is to the carpet, the easier it is to move (push). Use a straight stiff arm that is pointed down and move your arm at the shoulder with a near locked elbow.

Adjust height for plush carpet

The best solution is to change your method of trying to push the vacuum. The more upright the handle is on an Oreck, the harder it will be to push. The lower the angle (the closer the handle is to the carpet) the easier it will be to push. There will be a huge difference. Use a straight stiff arm that is pointed directly down towards the carpet. Use your shoulder and have a near locked elbow. The vacuum will now push easily.

While vacuuming it's unusually hard to push.

Hi,
I see your post is from May. I just joined Fixya this month so, id you're still looking for a solution, I would saythe belt broken or is so stretched the roller isn't spinning. Here is an link to an online guide with illustrations for changing belt. Also check the roller brushes for wear and change if necessary. Hope this helps.
