Hi guys,
My little brother just got a Wii for Christmas and it worked completely fine yesterday, but today when he tried to turn it on the cursor did not appear on the menu screen. The A, B, and Home (Menu) buttons all worked, and so did the - and + buttons, but there was no way to select the different applications like Mii and the disc slot, etc. I tried to re-sync it by pressing both sync buttons, and I also tried unplugging the sensor bar and replugging it, moving it around and resetting the Wii. I also tried to unplug the entire thing and then replugged it, but no luck. The information on the Nintendo support site said the remote itself needed to be repaired, but I was wondering if there is any other way I can fix this?
Thanks!
Lauren
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep trying to fix it... We think it might be a problem with the remote, but maybe it'll work tomorrow. Thanks! Thanks for the tip, I'll keep trying to fix it... We think it might be a problem with the remote, but maybe it'll work tomorrow. Thanks!
We have just turned on the Wii and the cursor has not appeared at all, nor can we seem to get it on the screen any way at all - and yes we are pointing it at the tv and the sensor is unobscured. It is very annoying as mummy is trying to work and us kids are bugging her to fix it.

The Wii was working fine one day and not the next. The cursor simply will not appear. We have tested the batties, try to re-sync the remote, unplugged the system and and plugged it back in, and recentering the sensor bar. All buttons work, but the cursor still will not appear. Could you please help us?

I had the problem where the cursor worked on the main menu screen, but disappeared once you entered any of the channels or a game. For me the problem was a faulty sensor bar. You can check if your sensor bar is working by focussing a digital camera on the bar as if you were taking a picture of it. In the viewfinder you should see 5 blue lights illuminated on both ends of the sensor bar. For me, only one side was illuminated. The sensor bar had to be replaced.
Try going to the Settings menu, then to the Sensor Bar settings. There is a sensitivity option there. If you turn it up to 5, instead of the default of 1, it will pick up on the infrared sensor bar (the thing you put above or below your TV) better. The only time this will cause problems, is if there are other devices around that emitt infrared light.
Hi,
This happens a lot with my son too, but if u keep persisting with it and moving while pressing the buttons on the wii, it should work, also, make sure sensor bar is where it should be in range of remote, hope this helps.
There are a number of items that this can be. I recently published a post on this with all the different methods that can fix the problem, supplementing Nintendo's recommendation with my experiences. That post in terms of fixing the Wii cursor not working can be found here:

Make sure to the little blue light on the wii remote is on on the far left. You may have to sync it. Take the battery out of the wii remote and there is red sync button. There is another red sync button under the little flippy door on the front of the wii where the SD card slot is. press both buttons and wait for the wii remote to stop blinking. Then point it directly at the sensor.
# Check that the Wii sensor bar is on or below the centre of the TV,and there is no obstruction with clear line of view between it and the Wiimote
# Go in Wii settings and check there are only 2 dots visible. If yes, crank up the Sensor bar sensitivity to 5 with 2 dots still visible, else adjust it till the 2 dots become stable at whichever sensitivity
# If there are more than 2 dots, there is some IR source in the rooms which is disturbing the wireless connection between the Wiimote and the sensor bar, so that source has to be removed from the room
Nothing else works, then resync the remote. Remove the batteries, wait couple of inutes, reinsert, and resync through the 2 red buttons.
This is really very frustrating when you face such kind of problems. You may check out Wii Fix Guide
to fix the problem yourself. This DIY guide will show step by step
pictures to fix the problems yourself without any technical knowledge.
Cursor not appearing Please note that our experience shows that this troubleshooting is best performed using only one (1) Wii Remote at a time.
Some games do not use the cursor feature of the Wii Remote; Make
sure the game you are attempting to play uses the cursor by reading
the game's instruction manual. You can also exit out of the game
to return to the Channel Menu and use the Wii Remote to see the
cursor. If the cursor still does not appear, continue with the
steps below.
Trying to use multiple Wii Remotes in the Mii
Channel or Photo Channel? These Channels only allow the Wii
Remote designated as "Player
1" to function.
Verify that the Wii Remote's pointer lens is free of obstructions
and contamination (stickers, heavy smudges, etc.). The pointer
lens is the tinted rectangle at the end of the Wii Remote.
Check the battery power level by turning off the Wii console, then
opening the battery cover of the Wii Remote. Press and release the red "SYNC" button
to check battery strength. The number of lights flashing indicates the Wii
Remote's battery strength. Four flashing lights indicates full strength.
Our experience has shown that as your battery strength decreases to one (1)
or less lights flashing, the cursor may not appear. For troubleshooting,
if possible, try using fresh batteries so that all four lights illuminate.
For guidelines on using batteries, please click
here.
If after
inserting brand new batteries, you are still seeing less than all four LEDs
flash, then your Wii Remote will need to be repaired. Please click
here for repair information.
Is the Wii Remote properly synced?
Press the POWER button on the Wii Remote to see if the Wii console powers
on.
If it does, the Wii Remote is synced with the system. Please skip to the
next section.
If the Wii Remote will not sync, there is likely a problem with the Wii
Remote. Please click here for
repair information.
If the Wii Remote will sync and the cursor still does not appear, try
another Wii Remote if possible.
If at least one Wii Remote is working, there
is likely a problem with the first Wii Remote and it will need to be repaired.
Please click here for
repair information.
If you have only one Wii Remote, or none that are working, please continue
troubleshooting.
Make sure that the Wii Remote is being used between 3' and 10' directly
in front of the TV and that there are no bright light sources affecting
the Wii Remote's operation (review Game
Play Guidelines for more information), and
that the Sensor Bar is placed properly (see Sensor
Bar setup).
Check the cord on the Sensor Bar for any frayed wires
or kinks, and verify that the Sensor Bar is free of obstructions.
Check the button functionality, and that the Sensor Bar is operating correctly,
by accessing the Wii Main Menu. Use the "+" and "-" buttons to scroll side-to-side
through the Wii Channel screens.
If you are able to scroll with the "+" and "-" buttons, but the cursor is
not appearing, then there is likely a problem with the Sensor Bar. Please click
here for additional Sensor Bar information.
If there is no response, there is likely a problem with the Wii Remote. Please click
here for repair information.
