No power and lens will not come out

When I turn on the PowerShot camera the red light comes on and it beeps but nothing else happens, then it turns off. It will not let me view pictures, view finder shows nothing, lens does nothing.

I've recharged the batteries, correctly installed the memory card. I used the camera two days ago perfectly, it has been in the same place since then and now this.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Canon Powershot S3 IS digital camera must be turned on several times before the lens will come out and the camera can be used to take photos. When turned on the lens trys too come out ( lens moves a litte and there is a motor sound)then there is a beeping sound and the message "lens error, restart camera" appears.

My S3 was working fine, then recently it takes about 10 seconds to start. The lens makes a noise like it is struggling to come out, then it finally does. In cold weather I sometimes get a "Lens error - restart camera". I think there is something in the lens mechanism but I don't know how to fix it.

Canon customer service told me to send it in for repair. I returned it to the retailer and requested a replacement camera.

For a few months I had the change batteries every other time I started the camera. Then one evening I took a few pictures and then the lens wouldn't retract all the way. Since I thought the two might be connected I recharged the batteries and tried again. Over the course of a few days, it retracted most of the way. Now it's barely out of range of the lens cap. I also tried getting stronger batteries 2500's. It acted like it was going to work, but then same result "lens error restart camera".

I called Canon about my "lens error, restart camera" and they told me to send it to their repair facility. I did and for a flat fee of $149 plus tax and shipping they fixed it. I had it back within a week and a half.

Your lens mechanism is jammed or off its "track" you need to get it realigned and lubricated w/a safe lube, like a white grease. You can try and gently "help" it out while it is trying to do this mechanically and if you hear a little ckick, then it may have realigned itself. Some have used compressed air to blow out any crud in there. Try these or take it to a camera shop. maybe they can help instead of sending it back for service as there is usually a fixed fee for ANY repair, big or small and usually eclipses the cost of a replacement camera, or very close to it.

You need to power it with rechargable batteries. with the MAH being no less than 2000. I bought a charger which came with 2batteries for less than a tenner

Camera rapidly beeps 6 times when powered up and immediately turns off!

I HAVE SOLVED THIS!
I Totally fixed my CAMERA!
If you turn on your camera, the lens does not come out, and it just beeps then turns off, then listen to me.
You need to unscrew the outer casing and take off the metal shell.
Hold the camera in one hand, palming it, looking down at the LCD (ie the lens is pointing into your palm). This is to orient you.
If you look at the left SIDE of the camera, near the upper left corner of the LCD, you can peek through some of the windows of the black plastic casing and see 2 PLASTIC GEARS. The top one is white, the other is black. These are the gears that actually move the lens in and out. All I did was give the white gear a good jiggle with the tip of a pen and evidently it made the teeth of the gears mesh together like its supposed to and .... VOILA .... the lens came out when I powered it on and all is well! I know this is gonna help someone!
