I have had this unit for five days and was in the process of setting up all of the options. It was working fine when I shut it off. When I restart it now it goes through the warning page, as it should, but when I touch the OK button, to proceed, it goes to system settings rather than the main menu. I can go through all of the settings and diagnostics, in settings, but I cannot get out of the this mode. I have tried the reset several. One other thing. When I use the touch screen test in diagnostics, I can touch the screen at any point to make it work rather than just the specific point requested. I also cannot exit this screen without turning the unit off.
Thank You
Regarding going straight to settings page, there is a file in one of the folders called navigator.exe. This is the menu used to access the map and the system settings and enter an address. Possibly, this file became corrupt while you were setting up your options. I suggest that you download the latest firmware update online from magellangps.com and install it. If, for some reason, the update fails after multiple attempts, then do the following:
I followed your directions above, and changed .exe to .zip: Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1.exe TO Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1.ZIP.
Then, I was able to unzip the files to see them. Then, I manually dragged all the exe files and all the dll files (i didn't bother with .bmp, .xml, or sound files). I had trouble with the file IVTDialorStrResChs.dll, and had to re-do this file and some others because I got a "file corrupt, can't copy" message. The second time, I got these to copy over.
After all this, I re-booted the Magellan. Then, I pluged it back into the computer using the USB so I could see the files again.
NOW, I ran Setup.exe by double clicking on this file in the open folder on my desktop (this is one of the files I unzipped under folder Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1).
It ran! I didn't need to be on the maps screen on the Magellan. Somehow, the file copies I did helped. This fixed the problem, I could see my home screen again Yeah! The customer service guy at Magellen told me to download the lateset update, and to do it manually, if I could. At first, he tried to get me to spend $200 on a new Magellan!!

Hi,
Its very simple to over come this problem, what u have to do is
Just push and hold the power button for continues for 20 sec.
Surely You wont face the problem again.....
Take it back to the store and get you money back or a new unit. You can try to deal with Magellan but that can be a very frustrating and long process. I been tryingto get my 4210 fixed for 5 months now
I had the same problem while trying to upgrade to the latest 4.60 firmware. I was able to get the update to work using Windows XP (not sure which service pack) but not with Vista Home. The device seems to be responding correctly now.
The problem might be the bad USB cable. Their cable is not made at high quality. Here is what you should do:
1) If you have a Canon camera, use that cable.
2) update the firmware again. I am pretty sure it will work. This is the problem I had.
If you do not have Canon camera but you may have another USB cable at home that has a similar connector, it should work.
As a follow-up, we just called Magellan and the tech said that it sounds like a software problem (no kidding!). He said to send it back to Magellan and we'll get a new unit in 10-15 days. ::shrugs::
I couldn't get my maestro to power up with the on button. It would start when I plugged it into the charger. Then that stopped. I looked and the power button wouldn't push down evenly. one side was stuck up. I pushed hard on that side with a pen and it went down. Now I'm back to it at least starting when I plug in the charger. I wouldn't say it's fixed, but I am better off.
I am having the same "System Settings" issue being discussed here. I tried connecting my unit to a PC, which still worked, and noticed some non-sensical file names in the Apps directory, so I'm wondering if this is a file system corruption issue. Sadly, I did not make a backup of the original file system to compare the current one with but one possible solution could be backing up the entire file system on PC and overwriting it if/when this behavior occurs.
I had the same problem with my 4250 on a recent trip to California. The unit eventually stopped powering up. I tried everything--including hoding the power button down for more than a minute. I eventually gave up on the unit, purchased a map and continued my journey to Nevada. After arriving at my final destination, I promply returned the 4250 to Costco and received my full refund. My 4250 was orignally purchased in February of this year. I won't purchase another Magellan.
I am on my second Maestro 4250. The first one was stuck on the "systems setting" page and was returned for repair. It took 6 weeks to get it back -- and I received a completely different unit (different serial number). Thus, my unit was not fixed, it was simply replaced (and it took 6 weeks for that). Now the replacement is DOA, too, but with different symptoms. The replacement unit won't go past the initial splash screen. I went through all of the hard re-sets, holding the power button down for 20 seconds, etc. as suggested by tech service, but to no avail. Now I can't even get an RA number from them to return it to service!!! My recommendation is to pay the extra $$ for a Garmin rather than a Magellan.....

I just called Magellan.....1-800-707-9971. I got my 4250 for Christmas 2007 and never did register it. We did that over the phone and then he gave me a repair order and an address to send the unit to them. It will be fixed under warranty.....my only cost is the UPS or FED EX shipping. He said I will have it back in 7 to 10 days. OUTSTANDING service.
Mine was stuck on the blue screen.......and the pin reset did nothing.
SO......best of luck to you all......and I highly suggest calling Magellan.

SOURCE: Magellan Maestro 4250 freezing up
I just purchased a referb from TigerDirect and the only issue I discovered was a lockup when the unit goes to sleep. Try holding down the power button for 15 seconds then release it to cycle the unit. Then hold the power button down again for 5 second to start it back up. I had to do this for my bluetooth to work and not freeze up. Now I just turn it on and off manually and avoid having it go to sleep. I also downloaded the firmware update to 4.86, you can download it from Magellan's website. My unit works great so if that doesn't work contact Magellan and I'm sure they will have a solution.

We are also having the same problem with our Magellan 4250. We have tried resetting the unit several times. When we turn it on, it also takes us to the warning screen. But once we press 'ok,' it sends us to the 'settings' screen. From this screen, we are able to access the settings functions, but it refuses to take us to the main menu when we tap on the back arrow.
I have the Maestro 4250 And after 4 days of programming my addresses
the unit when powered on only goes to the system settings menu. Just
got off the phone with support said it will take 3 weeks to fix.
Greetings,
As with the other three users I recently purchased a Maestro 4250 and had same difficulty of being "stuck" in the system page. It sounds like a common defect--cured only by a replacement unit! Thanks for the information.

My Magellan also is having power up problems. it is only 2 days old and won't turn on consistantly
I have talked to the Tech people at Magellan about my 2 month old Maestro unit. It is also stuck in System Settings. I knew from reading on line that there were issues with Magellan Maestro but the technician said that no one had reported such a problem before. Right!!! I would say to not buy from Magellan. I think that they are a rip off. They should replace a 2 month old product, not repair it.
Received my shiny new Magellan Maestro 4250 on Monday. Worked great Monday. On Tuesday evening (day 2) my 4250 boots, gets to the warning screen, I click the OK button, and I'm taken to the System Settings screen instead of the main menu. All the buttons (except the left arrow button on the bottom left corner of the screen) work. Volume button works, as do the Brightness, Power, Language, Time Zone, Unit of Measure, question mark (help), and the Next button.
Without being able to click the left arrow button, I'm stuck (apparently forever) on the System Settings screen. I've attempted using the reset button. I've held it for 20 seconds as suggested. I've tried holding it a minute, two minutes, three minutes. I'm stuck.
I plan to do some more digging around on the Internet to find a solution. Worse comes to worse I'll call the phone number listed on the 4250's help screen (800-707-9971). Wish me luck.
Gave Magellan Technical Support the benefit of the doubt and called them.
After about 10-15 minutes on hold, I spoke with "Jason" (ID 20041).
Jason asked me to press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
The 4250 rebooted, 4250 went to warning screen, I hit the OK button, 4250 went to System Settings screen. I’m still stuck.
Jason asked me to press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds.
The 4250 rebooted, 4250 went to warning screen, I hit the OK button, 4250 went to System Settings screen. I’m still stuck.
Jason asked me how recently I purchased it. I explained that the 4250 arrived from Amazon on June 23rd, the problems began on the evening of the 24th, and today (the 25th) is only day 3.
Jason told me to return the 4250 to Amazon for replacement. He said that I didn’t need an RMA number.
Cross your fingers.
Tried to download the 4.60 software update for the Magellan 4250 purchased from Amazon, screen froze up blank and now nothing will reset it. Suggestions?
up me also
Same problem. thought I would make sure it was updated before training the wife on use. Now I have a brand new POS. I wrote my request. I will not send it back. I will return it for another brand, I always had garmin before. They should have checked there update software before release. It locked up my whole computer. i had to shut it off at the back switch. If you hold the reset and the power button at the same time on the 4250 it will go in to boot mode. doesn't help anything though.
Tried to run the new map updates--got half way through died and then unit it now at the blue screen of death for Magellan. Will not reset with either the power button or reset button. CAlling them tomorrow.
My wife had the same issue with her fairly new magellan maestro. After pressing rest and power multiple times, the device would show the blue screen and then the screen would disappear. My wife was ready to return it. I then took the mini USB cable and plugged it into the way and the device started correctly. I tried to get the device to stop working by unplugging the mini USB but it continues to work correctly.
