The meter is telling you approximately how much current (amps) it is sending to the battery. When the meter moves all of the way to the right it is charging as hard as it can (that would be 6 Amps) which indicates that the battery needs a lot of charging. As the battery becomes saturated with charge, the meter will move toward the left. As the battery become charged, the unit automatically tapers off the current. The meter can indicate as little as little as zero Amps, meaning it is not charging the battery at all - which is the case when the battery is powered up, but isn't even connected to the battery. If it reads zero when it's connected to the battery, the battery is broken and can't be charged.
Since this charger is rated at 6 amps, it will indicate about 3 amps when the battery is about done. It won't normally go to zero because those 3 amps are getting wasted just heating up the battery.
For charging a car battery that is run down, use the 6 amp setting. The 2 amp setting is for smaller batteries (like a motorcycle or lawn mower battery) or if you are using it to maintain a charge on a battery that is used infrequently (like a boat battery).
You are correct on all accounts. A high number means you dying battery is sucking more juice from the Schumacker. A low number means the battery is not as thirsty. That's how I always think of how to read the meter on mine. Slow charge is a better, deeper charge. The quick charge will get you going, but you should maybe follow it up using the normal mode - car alternator and prolonged drive time. I never use quick charge, personally.
If you look at the meter, the charge meter of 100% is slightly above the 2 amp mark so it is confusing. because it says the charge represents the amont charged and the amp meter shows when there is no draw on the charger. so if the battery shows 2.5 amp on the amp meter, it's showing 100% charged. but yet they say it should go to zero on the amp meter, which would mean about 150% charged. i think everyone is scared of blowing up or damaging their batteries because the instructions manual is quite contradictory and confusing. well apparantly, they have several versions of this model to make it more confusing, but here's a pic of what i have. http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/zoom_images/1677820.jpg
ok, as i was looking for manual online, it is more detailed than the one in box. it now explains this in picture detail. thank you schumacher. here's the updated manual: http://www.batterysales.com/downloads/SE-82-6.pdf
