The first thing you need to consider is to pick a good program to do it.As the most recommended DVD burning program, Leawo DVD Creator can burn videos to DVD such as burn AVI to playable DVD most efficiently. Leawo DVD Creator provides various DVD burning options, for examples, you can design the DVD menu with built-in and online templates, and you can edit your movie before you burn it too DVD disc.

The drive wont read any burnt dvds, and ones that have stuff on it show up as blank cds. itll read actual dvd games though just fine.

The actual dvd were also burned somewhere, did you burn your stuff correctly, try playing those cd on another computer.
CLEAN, WASH YOUR DVDs CAREFULLY DON'T DESTROY THEM.
It doesn't look like your dvd drive is faulty.
Please feel free to ask me for further information.

The DVD/CD drive will play some CDs and not others When it does not play, the computer hangs and can only be restarted by switching off/on at the mains.

If your DVD/CD drive was not doing this before, know that it is getting spoiled, especially on it's lens. Or the CDs and DVDs which don't play might be burnt on a higher speed which is not supported by drive. Try to use CDs and DVDs burnt at the speed recommended by the drive's manual, usually a maximum of x24 for CDs and x16 for DVDs.

Dvd recording

I had the same problem and spent some time looking up this issue. I have a sony dvd player and it seems to have trouble reading almost any burnt dvd or cd. I have read that sonys seem to prefer the cheap dvds and cds for burning. It seems the cheap'O dvd players play burnt dvds and cds better that the nice ones, go figure.

There is more info out there about making sure to burn dvds and cds in the correct format.
You can try different burning software that has more options than just vista.
If you are creating a dvd from a movie file such as an avi or mpeg, please explain more on what you are doing and trying to accomplish.

Will Not Play DVD Movies

What program are you trying to use to play these movies? Windows Media Player will play some, but not others - I highly recommend Nero, WinDVD, PowerDVD or similar programs.

Question - are you able to browse the contents of the DVD drive in My Computer? Even if the movie doesn't play, you can still see the files (there will be an AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS folder, which a bunch of VOB files under the latter).

If you can see the files, but movies won't play, you just need the appropriate DVD playback software.

Hope this helps - remember to rate :)

Portable dvd player will play music cds but not video dvds

Chances are, your DVD player uses one laser to read CDs, and a different laser to read DVDs (since Cds and DVDs are read at different wavelenghts of light). If the DVDs you're trying to watch work properly in other DVD players, it probably means that the DVD laser is dirty, damaged, or burned out. Though you can try cleaning the laser (use Google for suggestions on how to do this, or check the Audiovox website), you will most likely have to get the DVD player repaired, or buy a replacement. Many of the newer CD/DVD players sold today use a single combination laser, which reads both CDs and DVDs, which means that when the laser fails, it will not work at all. Wish I had better news for you, but I guess that the only consolation you have is that your Audivox player still works with CDs...
