In my experience with a Pioneer DVD/CD drive, the DVD head and circuit is separate from the CD head and circuit. In my experience with a Pioneer combination DVD/CD drive, the DVD and CD heads and circuitry are completely separate. So, either one could go inoperative, and leave the other active. Of course, you could be one of the few with a dusty/dirty environment and/or you play discs which are occasionally contaminated with dried beverage residue, etc. In that case, there is certainly no harm in trying to clean the head, just to see what happens.Of course, you could be one of the few with a dusty/dirty environment and/or you play discs which are occasionally contaminated with dried beverage residue, etc. In that case, there is certainly no harm in trying to clean the head, just to see what happens.

Doesn't sound like a hardware problem if it just plays movies. Seems to be a sofware problem. I dont know how to flash a ps3 but it might help if you tried flashing the drive.
this is a problem the microsoft has been working on ... remove any disc from the tray> unplug it from all power the plug it back in> open the disc tray .. leave it open for a little while like 10-15 seconds .. then put the game in and it should work .. if it does not however you have one of the defected disc trays and you'll need to get it repaired by microsoft .. i know its not what you want to hear but hey at least they will fix it free of charge =]
TThe player does not play this type of dvd disk! only pre-recorded movies and CDs Try hooking Up a player that plays DVD+ and DVD- disks!Hope I was of help!

Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue?
You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues.
Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.
I called Samsung. They told me how to do a software reset and solve the problem 1. Take out all CDS. 2. Turn off and then on. 3. HOld down stop for 5 - seconds.
MINE IS DOING THE SAME EXACT THING. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY
