An orange light is illuminated on the power supply for one of the following reasons:
* The console is turned off.
* The power supply is disconnected from the console.
* The power supply cord is not fully inserted into the power socket of the console.
* The power supply is faulty.
* The console is faulty. (The console might be faulty if it does not turn on when the power supply light is orange.)
The power supply has several built-in safeguards to help prevent damage to either your Xbox 360 console or the power supply itself. The power supply will automatically turn off if either the current flow, the voltage, or the temperature is too high. When the power supply turns off for any of these reasons, the light on the power supply will turn from green (normal) to orange or to red, or the light will turn off. When the power supply light is green, the power supply is working correctly. What you are experiencing is an over heating issue, that may have damaged the supply.
With that being said, i would try to reset the supply by disconnecting the unit from the console, and unplugging the power supply unit from the wall socket for 5 minutes. Once the 5 minutes have passed, reconnect the unit to the console, and plug the power supply into the wall socket. If the console dose not power up, and the supply unit is still showing an orange illuminated operating light, this will confirm that the power supply unit will need to be replaced. Contact Microsoft for the correct replacement parts needed(power supply unit)
TIPS FOR PREVENTING OVERHEATING ISSUES
* Do not block any ventilation openings in the power supply.
* Do not put the power supply on a bed, on a sofa, or on any other soft surface that might block ventilation openings.
* Do not put the power supply in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well ventilated.
* Do not put the power supply on a stereo speaker, an amplifier, or a heat source such as a radiator or a heat register.
* Do not use an unlicensed accessory, such as a replacement power supply that was not manufactured by Microsoft, or any accessory that plugs in between the Xbox 360 console and the power supply.
* Plug the power supply directly into a working wall outlet. You may have problems with the power supply if you use an extension cord or a power strip if the extension cord or the power strip is faulty or cannot supply the required power to the console.
* If you are not sure about the reliability of an AC power outlet, power circuit, or power cabling, do not use it. Contact an electrician.

SOURCE: My Xbox 360 won't turn on. When I plug the power
Sounds like a bad power supply, or on two occasions I have found that one of the USB ports had a bent pin which was shorted to the metal housing, which wouldn't let the unit power on. So check all of the USB ports
SOURCE: My xbox 360 power supply has an orange light and
could be a simple broken power button or maybe a cracked solder point in the base of your console female power plug...
or even a internal eletrical problem...
Check and test with another power supply...
Good Luck...

Hmm sounds similar to me. I saw a post stating that usb port where the controllers are connected were shorting out to ground. So I took my 360 apart and sure enough the pins were shorted to ground. A good thing to check is the orange light on the power brick. If before you plug it into the back of the 360 its a steady orange light and then you plug it into the console it blinks (pay attention) its a good possibitility that it is shorting out somewhere in the console. If you have a mulitmeter you can check the back of the power plug input to ground or the controller usb to ground. Even though I found that this was my problem with my xbox unfortunately for me my board was also fried. From now on Im going to collect xbox's that are broken and use them to fix my new xbox when it breaks(im sure it will) because microsoft enjoys putting out an infererior piece of ****. I'll be dam*** if ill pay anyone a penny and wait half a year to get a repaired (but still broken) xbox back, when I know Ill be able to fix my own. Maybe Ill open up my own 360 repair shop just to show microsoft how. customer service should be handled. Anyway hope that helps and you have better luck then I did.

I hate it when people put "Red ring of Death" for a ORANGE flashing light on the power bar and actually a red ring on the front of the Xbox (which then would mean the red ring of death)!
I just fixed this problem for a friend. They had a contoller charging lead plugged in to the front which had a bad connection in it. Thats all it was so I just unplugged the charging lead and it worked.
So Unplug everything except the power and see if it works 1st, if it does then plug things back in one by one and see when it starts to flash and thats your problem lead there.
