Canon MVX250i Zoom

Hi, It seems as though my canons mvx250i zoom has developed a mind of its own. When I switch it on it starts to zoom on its own.The zoom control only overcomes this when the switch is in use.Sometimes I can stop the zoom by tapping the cassette cover. The problem does not seem to be related to the zoom switch. Many Thanks Regards

I have exactly the same problem since a few days. My little son got hold of it, can it be that he pressed a certain button (combination)?

This is obviously a common problem cause i too am experiencing this!

Hi Each,I had the same problem - I sent it for repair at great cost and it was ok for a while. I left the camera alone for a couple of years with the battery in (dow dead) and when I had another look at it the problem had returned! I have found that during playback if I press the photo button while holding the zoom button off (Wide) that after a photo has been taken the camera returns to wide (I have to keep holding the the zoom button. This does mean that I can play a tape and record to my PC. I haven't tried to hold the button for an hour but I recon I could use sticky tape to do this. It's an awful solution but it means that I get to recover old tapes and transfer them to DVD later. I hope this helps but if anyone has a proper solution I would love to hear it.Steve - Beverley, East Yorks

Change LI-ion battery (not main power battery) ...change it every 1 year if your camera in low-activity use.

Found the solution somewhere else on the net: just leave the camera lying with the batterie taken out for a while and it works again

  • Johan L Jun 08, 2011

I dare say this doesnt work. Ive had my camera, with the same problem, swiched off (though not without battery) for over a year, which means the battery was flat as a panncake. Sure enough, the same problem i had years ago, turned up again. Ive tried swapping batteries but to no avail. Shame to toss a nice camcorder but this is pure Canon garbage. Will use my Nikon Still-camera instead.

Replacing zoom switch on Canon Vixia HF100 camcorder.

I have had success finding such parts on Ebay though admittedly some must be shipped from overseas. You might also check Craigslist or Canon video forums for people selling this model for parts.

Canon MVX250i Camcorder SD card does not format in camera (it does happen in desktop pc only) It then takes multiple shots if I hold shoot button too long. I have used original 8MB card and another...

Many thanks for answering my email so promptly. I suddenly realized that I was describing two seperate problems and not one. I am 73.... refered to the manual again. Sorry about that.

I hadn't used camcorder for a long time but am always impressed with resolution of 'stills' - must be due to the cluster of fine lenses rather than 1.3 megapixels. I use it in this mode moreoften - better than carrying two cameras but it due have lots of 'tricks and treats' - many of which I have never learned! Terence

Zoom

Dear wwgirl:

Your problem initially sounded like a simple lens error (and was). However you now seem to have alsao developed a possible image sensor issue as well. Contact Canon Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 to set up a repair of the camera.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Playback error

I suspect the zoom is also a problem on the camera record also and not just in playback mode. Not certain as to why this happens but I have solved this problem on two MVX250i's by doing the following:
Remove the battery, release the palm strap (velcro) and open the cassette door. remove the two small screws, one in the front and one in the rear of the switch panel holding the zoom button. remove also the two screws it the face of the door cover. Grip the ends of the switch panel with one hand and raise it slightly. At the same time pull lightly on the plastic door cover in a slightly downward direction and the three lugs holding the cover should release. The lower edge of the cover is held with a hook under the metal door and a small metal hook on the lower corner by the strap. The speaker is mounted on the plastic cover and connected by printed cables. Take care not to damage these. The printed cable is attached to the door with an adhesive pad which can be carefully removed and the speaker will then fall from its socket. Close the cover and re-fit the battery. Check if the fault still occurs. On both my cameras the fault disappeared at that point and remained solved when re-assembled. I suspect it to be a poor joint on the printed cables where they enter the sockets at each end.Moving the cables slightly seemed to be the solution. To get to the lower end connection the cassette mechanism has to be parted from the camera. Not an easy job. The top end connection is not easy to access either. When re-fitting the speaker, make certain it is seated correctly in its socket. If it is not then it will short against the metal door.
This operation requires a very small screwdriver, a steady hand and good eyesight/lighting. Re-assembling is never as easy as dismantling so beware. Needless to say I will take no responsibility for these suggestions should it result in your not being able to reassemble it or in your damaging it in the process.

Canon MVX250i Zoom Problem

I had this problem on this camera. I found the battery removal rechnique seemed to work for only a short while, then the problem would come back repeatedly. I looked into just buying a new one but when I explained the problem to a salesman in an independent camera shop, he asked me if I'd just tried hitting the top of the camera. Apparently the motor sometimes gets stuck. Since the camera was virtually useless I tried this (hit it 2 or 3 times quite firmly, near the lens and by the accessory shoe). Now it zooms in and out perfectly and so far hasn't reverted to its problem state.

Must try to give the camera shop some other business - maybe when I buy a new stills camera

Canon XM2

You might have bad contact in zoom switch unit or a short in zoom switch. The switch assembly is replaced for the remedy.
