Ford fusion is diesel engine, but put unleaded in tank in error. not started engine. whats best to do ? drain the tank ?
DO NOT PUT PETROL IN A MODERN DIESEL ENGINE. Diesel is a lubricate fuel and protects the internal fine tolerance working parts of the diesel fuel system. Petrol is a cleaning agent and removes all the lubricate from the internal fine tolerance working parts of the diesel fuel system this can cause unrepairable damage to the engine. Drain the fuel tank (it may be easier to remove the fuel tank to clean it out properly), all fuel lines and the fuel filter, refill tank and fuel lines and filter with diesel bleed the fuel system including the fuel injectors (I always bleed it back into a drain pipe into a bottle at the return pipe connection at the fuel tank to ensure that all the petrol is out of the fuel system before starting the engine) once started put some good quality diesel fuel cleaner in the fuel tank to make sure the injector tips are cleaned out. Note change the fuel filter again after another 2000 miles of running
DRAIN IT! - you don't need to wash it out or anything, snice a little petrol in a diesel engine will clean the fuel pipes of any sediment and wax, it's actually a done thing to put a litre or two of petrol in a tank of diesel for diesel engines...
