Jrichards - I hate it when that happens! It seems that power is not getting to the armature from the brushes so I would suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them? I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the contacts are facing in the right direction to contact the armature. The concave contact face should be resting completely on the armature. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly. I hope this helps... Howard, Burke, VA

I took my kitchenAid stand mixer (md# KSM5PSAC) apart to replace the plastic gear inside of it. When I put it back together it would not start. I took it back apart took a good look at all the connections,...

You need to either re-time the speed control switch at the back or replace it. If it worked great before then it is just an adjustment to get it back to running correctly. YouTube viseo available for timing the switch

Need to replace brushes for hobart k45ss mixer. Where can I find the parts

Hello Tony,

I have located the brushes for your K45 mixer, the Repair clinic has them in stock for $4.38 each, the Item # 1549909, and you may use the link below:
http://www.repairclinic.com/Kitchenaid-Motor-Parts?z=100&gclid=CKSD5NriuKcCFUVqKgodIE2b_g

You will also want to pay attention to the side of the brushed that are angled as they only go in one way. You will have to look inside the brush hole and make sure you put the angle to the same side as the angle on the inside of the hole and everything should work just fine.

Thank you for using FixYa to find your solution.

Brushes stuck, afraid i put them back in wrong. now they wont come back out with the spring when i take the black plug out. no power when i turn on the switch.

you can access the brushes from inside the mixer if you take it apart. Look at the parts diagram here to see if you can figure out how to disassemble it:

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208212369.pdf

Once you have it apart you can use a small screw driver to push the brushes out from the inside.

I took a KitchenAid K45 apart to clean (made in

What everyone is forgetting or they just don't know is that...The K45 introduced by Hobart in 1962 and was replaced in 1978 by the K45SS are two completely different machines. With completely different wiring systems. The K45 is wired together with wire nuts and the K45SS used connectors on the Speed control switch. All of the websites posted above are for the K45SS (Stands for Solid State) The manual for he K45SS is easy to get from Kitchenaid as the mixer electronics did not change from it's introduction in 1978 to 1986 when Hobart sold the Kitchenaid division to Whirlpool. The K45 on the other hand is a product and property of Hobart NOT Whirlpool or the Kitchenaid division of Whirlpool. The K45 Manual ... well I just can't find one! They way wires are routed is totally different in the K45 from the K45SS so the diagram in the K45SS manual does not help. Also the brushes in the K45 were square not camphor-ed like they are in the K45SS so there is no right or wrong way to insert the brushes in a K45. Whereas; in the K45SS there are four ways to insert the brushes in their holder and three of them are wrong. The K45SS brushes go into a completely different brush holder than the K45. The K45SS is the same today in 2012 as it was in 1978. The K45 is the same only from 1962 when Hobart introduced it to 1978 when it was replaced with the new Solid State model. prior to 1962 it was the K4-A model and it was different entirely. So if the people asking for help say their mixer is a K45 we should be asking for clarification as to a K45 or a K45SS.

KitchenAid Mixer stopped working after I took the black screws on the side out. Thought that I put it back in right with the springs. Maybe I didn't. What could have happened? Thanks Nancy

The brushes must be insert in a particular manner in order for it to work correctly. If you remove the brushes and shine a flashlight into the hole, you should see a small detent or "stop" in one corner of the hole. Its a square hole. Match this corner with the corner of the brush which is shaved off. The brush is not square; it has one corner shaved or smoothed down. This allows the brush to fully extend into the hole. If the brush is inserted any other way, it will not contact the motor and will not run.

Which way do the brushes go on the K45SS stand KA Mixer?

Look carefully at the bruch, it should have a cupped chape that matched the curve of the armature. If it went in wrong, you may have wither broken the brush, or messed the armature. You can get new brushes online from many parts retailers, just google you part number and the word "brushes"
