Compressor short cycling

It is called short cycling. Help below

If your refrigerator is short cycling, it can be caused by a number of issues including: An incorrectly set thermostat inside your refrigerator. Dirt and dust on the coils that prevents efficient operation. Faulty capacitors or relays that prevent the compressor from staying on.

Check for a faulty hard start relay/capacitor on compressor if latter is not running. If that does not resolve the issue and you can confirm that the motor is receiving power then the compressor is shot. Not cost effective to replace.

It sounds like you may have a compressor that is working hard against high pressure due to a dirty condenser or a condenser fan not running or blocked. If all is well otherwise, the mounting springs inside the compressor may have broken or are weak. The only fix then is a new compressor.

Your refrigerator may be stuck in defrost cycle. I know it has a defrost timer part number 215846602 Most times they are located inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. Sometimes below fridge and behind kick plate. The thermostat could be defective also. You can check that by unplugging the refrigerator remove cover and checking continuity between the two male connections located on the rear side of thermostat control turned as cold as you can turn it. Or you can join the two wires together and plug refrigerator back in to see if compressor comes on. When you find the defrost time turn clockwise slowly until the refrigerator starts. Replace the thermostat. (off/on control)

wihtout replacing the relay there really isnt any way to tell if its the compressor or the relay. the relay is veyr inexpensive in comparison to the compressor usually less than 70 bucks. and the best part is you can replace it yourself as opposed to paying a service company. this is the part number 218721113 and it prices at 38 dollars thru  sears.com.
once you replace the part if the compressor starts you should be ok. if it doesnt start then you will need to call a service company to replae the compressor or look at replaing the refrig. if the unit is less than 5 years old it may be under warranty for the compressor so check into that first. if I can be of further assistance dont hesitate to ask. thanks Peyton

For the 25 year old freezer: a replacement compressor of the same BTU rating can be obtained and used as a replacement BUT at 25 years old I DO Not recommend the expense of a compressor replacement.

To the owner of the six year old freezer. The buzzing noise is more than likely the compressor cycling on its overload protector. This is an indication that the compressor has failed. In this case also I do not recommend replacing the compressor. If it was in warranty the manufacturer would bear the cost. Replacement compressor come with a one year warranty.

check the overload, take it loose and inspect it for a burnt spot shake it if it rattles replace the relay
you either have a relay bad or a stuck compressor
the compressor has a 5 year warranty on the part, the relay 1
so if you relpace the relay and it still doesnt run the compressor, call for serviece under warranty

could be a sensor, 6 dollars, could be the mother board, could be the compressor or overload, could be encoder board i would call factory service, some of these parts are high dollar
