Make sure the gps have a full view of the sky. leave it in aquiring mode and let it sit there. My Emap took up to 35 mins once to reaquire the sats and get the updated info needed for position info.
if the unit has been off for a long time or moved a long distance from where it was last turned on, it can take a while for it to come back up.

Testimonial: "Thank you for your advice, I am going to go out and try again. The GPS has been moved from Texas to Pennsylvania and probably hasn't operated very much. I didn't realize it would take so long to reprogram itself."

My garmin nuvi 1300 will not aquire satellites

This seems to happen quite often with GPS units. There are a few things that could cause this to happen. Is the GPS mounted in view of the sky? If not it may not be able to acquire the satellites. If this is not the problem, try performing a reset by pressing the top left corner of the screen while pressing the power button. These two things will usually help, but in the case that they don't, contact their support at 1-800-800-1020 and they should be able to assist you.

GPS wont aquire a satellite

Hello there and happy new year
If Your Unit Cannot Acquire Satellite Signals
  1. For your Garmin GPS unit to acquire the satellite signals it needs to function properly, the unit must be taken outside, away from mountains, tall buildings and heavy foliage where it can get a clear view of the sky. Keep the unit stationary for several minutes while the GPS unit acquires the necessary satellite signals. It may take several minutes for the unit to locate a good solid signal
  2. OK
  3. Hope this is very helpful please keep me posted on this ok?
    Best regards Michael

While driving Garmin Nuvi 250 constantly loses satellite signal. The screen says that it is aquiring a signal. It is also constantly refiguring the route.

If a device is used daily it should be able to acquire satellites in a minute or less. Using a GPS device while it is outdoors with a clear view of the entire sky is the ideal condition for acquiring satellites. Please know that there can be several different factors that may cause a GPS unit to not acquire satellites:
  • If your unit is trying to acquire satellites for the first time, it may take longer than normal to establish an initial position. If the unit is powered on and outdoors with a clear view of the sky this should not take more than 3-5 minutes.
  • If your unit has not been used for an extended period of time (more then a month), it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire satellites.
  • If your unit is indoors, it may not acquire satellites. Even standing next to a window indoors will block a majority of the sky which is needed for a device to locate and lock onto a satellite signal.
  • If you have just finished updating the software in your unit or you have performed a master reset, your unit may take 3-5 minutes to acquire while outdoors as the data that is used to locate satellites may have been erased.
  • If your unit has traveled over 500 miles while turned off or not tracking your travel, it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire even in ideal conditions.
  • If your vehicle has a protective coating on its windshield or electronic devices which interfere with the unit receiving signal, your unit may need an external antenna* in order to acquire satellites.
    • If you suspect this to be an issue, try taking the unit outside of the vehicle with a clear view of the sky for 3-5 minutes so that the unit can acquire satellites. If your unit loses satellites once moved back into your vehicle you will most likely need an external antenna*.
If your unit is still having trouble acquiring satellites, please ensure that it has the latest version of operating software by using our WebUpdater program. Once your unit is updated please allow the unit to acquire satellites outdoors in a stationary position with a clear view of the sky.

Unable to aquire satelites garmin nuvi 255 w. flew from newfoundland to toronto. unable to aquire sattelites at toronto.

When you change geographical locations with any GPS it will take a lot longer for the GPS to acquire the sattelites. Hold the GPS out in an unobstructed area and switch it on. Be patient it will acqurie the signals if it was working before you left home.

Hello i have the garmin 250 i had brought it on the water a few weeks ago and as soon as i got of the water it has a question mark and says aquiring satatiles but never picks up a signal and doesnt work...

Question: Why won't my unit acquire satellites?
--> Answer: There are a several different factors that can cause a GPS unit to not acquire satellites:
  • If your unit is indoors, it may not acquire satellites.
  • If your unit is trying to acquire satellites for the first time, it is normal for it to take a while to establish its initial position.
  • If you have just finished updating the software in your unit or you have performed a master reset, your unit may take longer than normal to acquire.
  • If your unit has traveled a long distance while turned off or not tracking your travel, it may take a longer period of time to acquire.
  • If your unit has not been used for an extended period of time, it may take a longer period of time to acquire.
  • If your vehicle has a protective coating on its windshield or electronic devices which interfere with the unit receiving signal, you may need an external antenna.
If your unit is not acquiring satellites, it is recommended that you place the unit in a stationary position where it has a clear view of the sky. In some cases it may be necessary to take the unit outside of your vehicle as certain vehicles inhibit the unit from acquiring satellites. As the unit receives signal from the satellites, it will begin to lock on to them individually until it has acquired enough information to establish your position.

If your unit is still having trouble acquiring satellites, please ensure that it has the latest version of operating software. You can do this using our WebUpdater program which can be found at the following link:

Unit will not acquire the satellite signs

FYI ....My Roadmate 760 would not aquire a signal, I went to diagnostic screen and found it was detecting/tracking 0/0 satellites. Held the plugged in unit out the window and within 10 seconds was tracking 7 satellites! Turned out my 1999 Olds Silhouette Van has a anti-glare filter inside the factory windshield that blocks GPS signals. My wifes 2001 Chevy Impala also has same type filter. Check your windshield, filter is visible inside glass to within about three inches of edges of glass. Worth a look.
