The memory on my built in DVR is full and I can't access the recorded material inorder to delete some things and make more room. The tv wants me to initialize the HDD, thus erasing everything we have recorded.

Maybe you have to many recordings and the disk drive is full. Try to delete a few recordings then try to record. If that works you might want to delete more things.
I've got one. Does exactly the same thing. It usually happens within the first, say, 10 hours of recorded material. This is the most used part of the hard drive disc. We have 5-9 hours of programs we intend to keep so we end up re-recording over the next part of the disc repeatedly. This wears that part down. What I did was keep 2-3 hours of stuff in that zone and carried on recording and deleting as usual, as I still do. I'm watching it right now. But if I erase past the break 'zone', the recordings 'jump'. It has a big memory and shouldn't be a problem. So..........fill with programs to half the disc and record over the lesser used part of the disc.....it works for me. I'd be interested in hearing how you get on. Good luck Red.
Our receivers can only hold a certain number of timers before some have to be deleted. To fix this message, on most receivers, press the DVR button three times to access "Daily Schedule". From there select 'Timers' then 'Edit Timers'. Once they have been deleted, more can be setup!

Hello marymlbert there are some things we can check to makesure the issue is resolved, the first thing you will need to do is unplug thereceiver power cord for 10 seconds and plug it back in. It will power back upby itself and then you will need to press Menu and push the buttons 6-1-1 onthe remote. You will then select the Check Switch button, and then select Test. After the test has run its full cycle exit out of all menus and then try toplay a recording and see if the issue is resolved.
I cannot help with your problem but unfortunately the same thing has just happened to me this morning. I woke up and every recording is apparently gone, but I cannot record because it says there is no room on the HDD and for me to delete titles. Can anyone help!?
Check to see how full you DVR is. This happened to us and our DVR was filled up. When that happens the DVR starts to delete stuff, even protected things. It will first delete non-protected shows and then if there are none left to delete and room is still needed, it will delete other shows. Not sure, or can't remember how it prioritizes the deletion but it happens.
Check how full you DVR is and that may be where your problem lies.
Try 'Enter' if you haven't already.
A yes/no question on a cable box is usually a toggle, so select yes and press Enter. If that doesn't work, try a different code from the system menu. (Press 'System' and go to 'remote control.')
delete all recordings from hard drive unplug the receiver from the wall for 5 minutes and plug it back in, if 311 error message appears call dish network
