If there are no red flashing lights around the power button, check your cables. The xbox doesn't like to be turned on without the A/V cable plugged in, so it might have come loose from the TV. I'd check the connecting point to the TV, and the TV settings (make sure it is set to the xbox input, and not, say, a DVD/cable box input)

The GPU (graphics chip) has been known to go bad quite easily on the xbox, but I wouldn't want to tackle repairing that unless you see the red lights blinking (which is a sure indicator that it needs to be repaired)

My xbox shows no picture but has sound

This might not help everybody but it might be a cheap fast solution to the "Xbox 360 no picture but sound ok" problem. I have old refurbished 360 that has had no problems at all. SInce I got it have used it with powerwave cooler attached to the back. This cooler has seperate Outputs for Vga, SVga, audio, component and av. Don't need the microsoft cable at all just standard cables. Always had it plugged in with VGA or SVGA cables and got great picture. I bought new 360 and put the old one in bedroom with old tv which only has av inputs. Got shocking picture that was unwatchable but sound was good. Tried all ways but no different. Seems the xbox plug has problems. If you get the powerwave cooler it splits the xbox output socket in to seperate outputs for everything so you can use it with Vga or Svga cables if your tv has those inputs and it should work fine. Only seems to be the standard AV outputs that have problems. Haven't tried the componet leads but I guess they might work as well. If you only have the old yellow, red and white AV inputs on your tv this wont help you but if you have the other types of inputs it might fix it. The powerwave cooler you should be able to buy for under $20 so it could be a cheap solution for this problem everyone seems to be getting lately. It works for me at least so get one and give it a try.

No video, appears to be no video sync, diagonal rows of dots. Not an HDMI TV, switch is in TV position, cable checked ok by using a new cable, same problem

Sounds like you have an incorrect output signal from the Xbox or a fried chipset in the Xbox. Test the Xbox on another TV or monitor, test another video source on that same connection, if both of those fail, replace the Xbox. Hope it helps!

I am using my xbox 360 via HDMI, and I have a 5.1 surround sound system hooked up via RCA output from the tv. If I switch it onto the coax input it works, but when I switch to HDMI it doesnt. Is there a...

no, there's no firmware upgrade that you can do on the tv. the reason for that is because you are sending digital sound to the tv with hdmi from xbox 360,and when you have rca cables connecting your tv and surround sound, the rca cables provide stereo sound. what you need to do if you want to use hdmi is connect optical cable from tv orxbox 360/ or tv to your surround sound to get digital sound, and it will sound better digital sound.

RE: No Picture

Ok,

Then it is a hardware issue. If you have tried the switch, tried multiple cables, and tried it ondifferent tv's and it still does not work than this sounds link theknown X-Box 360 video problem.

Red Ring of Death problem is that the GPU(Graphical Processing Unit) has a tendency to overheat, which wouldmake sense why you get no video, since this is the internal componentthat sends out video through your a/v cables to your tv. The Sound cardand motherboard probably still work, so that is why you would still getsound.

So the only solution is to get it serviced.
