Dell made an entry into the market of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) with Axim X5. The Dell Axim comprises of families of X5, X3, X30, X50 and X51. The Dell Axim PDA can be connected to the computer either by using a cradle or a sync cable. The sync cable connects the device to the computer directly. Here are the steps for connecting a Dell Axim to a computer using a sync cable.

  1. p 1 The Microsoft ActiveSync software must be installed in order to connect the PDA to the computer. This software is found in the Dell Axim Pocket PCDoes not recognize my connection for active sync - mag-glass_10x10.gif Companion CD.
  2. Step 2 The Axim X51 PDA has a 36-pin connector, while the X3 has a 22-pin docking connector.
  3. Step 3 Connect the USB connector found at the end of the sync cable to the computer.
  4. Step 4 Check the PDA. If the PDA is not properly cabled to the computer, you will get the following message: “Connect your device to a computer using a sync cable or cradle before running the system update. Ensure that ActiveSync is installed on the computer and that the ActiveSync connection is successful.”
  5. Step 5 Ensure that the Dell logo faces upward.
  6. Step 6 Use the sync cable to set up a partnership, which can be done multiple times when you sign in as a guest.

Phone memory & Active sync problems

1. Not sure why its not syncing. You may try uninstalling active sync from your computer and reinstalling.
2. Get another memory card and put the files on there, or get a card reader and transfer them to your computer.
Uninstall any unnecessary programs from the phone to free up space.

Connecting to pc

make sure you've loaded the software the phone came with onto the host pc (fully loaded it, and go through the "configuration" routine it asks you to complete after installing the activesync software). That should fix your problem. Incidentally tho, i've connected my phone via usb cable to pc's that did NOT have the active sync software installed, and those pc's still recognized the phone as a removable drive (without the syncing capability). You can still install applications and syncronize files manually so long as the host pc sees it as a removable drive tho (although it takes a tad bit more technical knowledge, such as file paths and the like)

How to connect it to a pc running Win XP

Simply download the active sync from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/default.mspx

And use the USB cradle to connect to computer (You can also use Infrared and Bluetooth). As long as active sync is on the computer system will recognize pocket PC automatically

When I connect my iPAQ to my PC, it will not recognize the device

It shouldn?t take more than 10 to 15 seconds for Active Sync to detect the iPAQ once it is inserted in the cradle and it turns on. First off you need to update to the latest version of Active Sync which is 4.5. Lots of synchronization issues have been fixed since 3.7 so here is the link to the download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9e641c34-6f7f-404d-a04b-dc09f8141141&DisplayLang=en A couple of times over the past few years I?ve gotten a non recognition error as well. Each time I?ve been able to get away with removing and installing the latest version and my problem has been solved.
