When you have replaced the lamp in your DLP projection TV, and you still get lamp warnings and blinking standby lights or the light levels are extremely low, compared to the old lamp, your ballast probably needs replaced. Odds are it shorted out or developed problems when the old lamp failed.
This is not a hard unit to replace on most sets but may require a little knowledge and familiarity with DLP projection units. The ballast makes the voltages for the lamp circuit. The ballast is generally located near the lamp and has two large soft rubber wires going to the lamp assembly. If you follow the wires from the back of the lamp, the box they lead to is the ballast.
Replacement of the ballast involves removing any screws holding the cover on and the board in the TV. Disconnecting any wires from their plugs. Mark them with a sharpie prior to removal for easy assembly using a different number for each connector.
Reassemble the unit using the new board and make sure that all covers are in place and all wires are properly connected. You may be able to download a service manual at
http://www.retrevo.com which will help with part numbers and has instructions on the removal and replacement of the ballast as well as diagrams and pictures to help with disassembly and reassembly. Retrevo does not have all service manuals. If you want one and are willing to pay about $16 US go to
http://www.servicemanuals.net . The manuals can be downloaded instantly.
Any parts needed may be obtained at
http://www.encompass.com or
http://www.shopjimmy.com .
http://www.encompass.com sometimes will have the service manual for free download. Again they do not have everyone and it depends on your model, but it certainly is worth checking prior to purchasing one.
When the job is complete your unit should be operational. If there are more problems try my tip at
