I have a craftsman garage door opener. Has always worked fine. Suddenly, it will close about a foot, and then retract. But not all the time. In order to make sure it closes, we have to either hold the remote button, or hold enter on the keypad for about 10 seconds. Then it will close all the way. I checked the track, the chain, everything seems clear. And now, suddenly today the light doesn't work anymore (yes, I replaced the bulb). The opener was installed by previous owner, and I had the actual door replaced when I moved in four years ago.
A couple of other notes. It will always open just fine. My wife tried to manually close it when this started to happen, and the pull string came off, but that should have no effect(?). This was the first time anything happened.
Any idea what might be causing this abnormal behaviour?
A couple things to check and do. If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and that the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a bit if necessary.
If the main light isn't flashing it may just be a simple adjustment. Locate the 'down force' adjustment on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Increase this about 1/4 turn and try.
For the light you should unplug the unit and then using a small screwdriver pull out on the center contact in the light socket.

This was fairly helpful. The bulb works now. The sensors appear to be aligned, and I even slightly adjusted one...but there's more to the story now. One of the sensors has a green light on it, and it goes out when I block it. The other sensor is street-light amber, and does not go out when blocked. I think that will be my issue, but not sure if the sensor is shot, or if this means the wire is faulty... Any thoughts?
