If the picture is taken vertically in EOS 400D SLR, there will be a black shade appearing in right side of the image. This issue was not there earlier. In recent times it started happening. It works fine if the picture is taken horizontally.

I would be interested in seeing the dark image... check that its not the camera strap or some other part of your own pereson. Hold the camera UNDER the lens and take a vertical, noting where the camera strap is at the time. Perhaps put an example on one of the free photo sites and send us the link.
There is nothing inside a camera that should move and put a dark image on any pic.

LCD monitor works to display picture already taken and the menu display, but with not display live images. Must use the view finder. Menu does not have a "live view"

There is no function to do this on the EOS 400D. Don't forget the camera is an SLR and still has to open and close a shutter to take a picture. The image is then converted using a CCD instead of exposed on film. I find with my 20D I just take loads of pictures and review them and then delete the ones that I don't want. This is the beauty of the digital age.

My EOS 300d blank images

That problem is normally associated with having a too high shutter speed when using flash. If it happens in any mode, with or without flash you may have a shutter blind issue.

Test the camera at various shutter speeds and compare the results. If this black area is consistant across different shutter speeds, send it in for repair. It is most likely the shutter curtain not making a pass across the sensor fast enough, still obscuring the sensor when a photo was taken.

Date on pictures taken and movie shooting on canon eos 400d

The EOS Digital Rebel, EOS Digital Rebel XT and EOS Digital Rebel XTi do not support stamping the date and time on the image.

It is not possible to record the date and time as part of the image at the time the picture is taken. However, the date and time is captured in the EXIF information of the image at the point of capture. It is possible to print the image with the date and time via printing software. Please see the documentation for the software package that you use for printing images for the proper procedure.

Uneven flash

Look carefully at your images taken with flash... on the horizontal image is the lower part of the image slighty darker and have a rounded fall off at the edges? Is the vertical image dark side a straight hard line or is there a rounding to the top and bottom?

What we are looking at is if you have a very wide angle lens with the lens shade attached to the lens, then the built-in flash catches part of the lens shade and make a shadow on your subject... take the lens shade off and try the same shot and see if that makes a difference...

Have a great day...

LCD Display

As far as I am aware, the 400D doesn't have a live preview mode.

What you are describing is perfectly normal and is how 99% of digital SLR cameras behave.

Are you sure it used to do this?

No image on lcd

This is not a problem. This is how the camera is designed to work. It is an SLR and you must view the picture you are taking through the small viewfinder not the LCD. It simply reflects the camera settings, etc. I too was thinking it was a "viewfinder" and a bit disappointed that it wasn't. Oh well.

Is my canon eos 400d broken?

This is a Digital SLR With SLR cameras you can only use the viewfinder because the image comesi nto the lens and up to the viewfinder via a mirror. When to take a pic the mirror flips up[usually with a crash] and the image goes to the CCD- afterwards you will get an image briefly in the LCD.
