Needle severs thread each time I start sewing

Make sure that the presser foot is raised if you are winding a bobbin with the top thread threaded through the needle. Place the bobbin on the spool spindle with the mark (a stylized H) outwards. Bring the bobbin spindle down. Next pull the thread from the needle under the presser foot to the thread guide on the right. Bring the thread above the bobbin and wrap the thread around the bobbin several times. Cut off the excess thread on the thread knife and step on the foot control to wind the bobbin. When the bobbin winding is finished, remove the bobbin from the spindle. Cut the thread to separate the bobbin thread from the needle thread. Move the bobbin spindle up.

Check the upper tension by lowering the presser foot and pulling on the thread through the needle. You should feel resistance. If not, take a stiff brush and clean out the tension disks/dials removing any loose threads or lint. If upper tension is ok, check bobbin tension by pulling thread through needle plate opening. You should feel resistance. If not, remove bobbin case and brush any loose threads or lint from the case, especially in the tension spring where the thread is snapped into place. You may need to use a sharp needle to dig in between the spring but be careful that you don't damage it.

If the thread breaks at the needle and is feeding smoothly from the spool, you may have the tension too high. It is impossible to say what the setting should be because the knob rotates all the way around several times. Loosen it off until you see needle thread pull to the back of the quilt, then tighten until it just balances the interlocking of the stitch in the fabric. Test with little swirls, that's most likely to pull needle thread to back.Also, check that the needle is properly installed and that the hook to needle timing and clearance are good.Nesting of thread underneath usually happens if the foot lifter is left up or the tread is not fully in the disks of the tension unit.

Top thread can break for several reasons, are you susing a quality thread and new needle? Also, are you sure you have the thread seated in the top and bottom disc properly?

I suspect you are correctly threading the machine but the timing of the needle and bobbin hook is off. When the threaded needle goes into the bobbin area, a pointed hook grabs the thread and loops it with the bobbin thread. Something is catching when the needle starts to come up that is not allowing the bobbin thread to be pulled back through the needle plate opening by the upper thread. With machine threaded and bobbin in place, have the bobbin area open if possible and watch the thread interaction when the needle goes down. To set the hook/needle timing, normally covers have to be removed. Suggest taking it to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service. Sounds like the hook/needle timing. To check do the following:

With the power off!!
remove bobbin and bobbin case.
push needle all the way to the left.
Turn handwheel toward you watching the needle and bobbin housing hook. The point of the hook should line up right above the eye of the needle.

If not timing, clean bobbin area removing lint and thread.
Check bobbin tension, should get slight resistance when pulling thread.
Make sure using only Husqvarna Viking bobbins -- most are green but they have new colors now. All will have the Husqvarna logo on them (an H). Make sure the bobbin is unwinding in the right direction.

Remove fabric. Pull extra long bobbin thread (about 3 inches). Hold upper thread tail in left hand, turn handwheel toward you for 1 revolution. Is the bobbin thread caught by the top thread and pulled through the opening of the needle plate?

If you are still unable to get a good stitch, take to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service or have them send to Husqvarna Viking (SVP) Technical Service Dept for repair. A list of dealers close to you can be found at the Husqvarna Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us

Could be needle/hook timing. With machine off do the following to check timing -

remove bobbin and bobbin case.
push needle all the way to the left.
Turn handwheel toward you watching the needle and bobbin housing hook. The point of the hook should line up right above the eye of the needle.

If not timing, clean bobbin area and thread cutter area, removing lint and thread.
Check bobbin tension, should get slight resistance when pulling thread.
Make sure using only Husqvarna Viking bobbins -- most are green but they have new colors now. All will have the Husqvarna logo on them (an H). Make sure the bobbin is unwinding counter clockwise when going through the bobbin case.
Remove fabric. Pull extra long bobbin thread (about 3 inches). Hold upper thread tail in left hand, turn handwheel toward you for 1 revolution. Is the bobbin thread caught by the top thread and pulled through the opening of the needle plate?

If you are still unable to sew without thread balling up, take to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service or have them send to Husqvarna Viking (SVP) Technical Service Dept for repair. Did you bend the throat plate? I have done that and it was a nightmare. I took it off and gently hit it from the backside with a towel over it to bend it back the way it was. It worked fine.

This is a hook/needle timing issue. It will need to be adjusted by an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer or they can send to Husqvarna Viking (SVP) Technical Service Dept in Tennessee for them to do the repair. Several things could be happening. It may be the hook/needle timing. Or it could be the feeddogs are not moving (that's the toothy looking part under the presser foot that moves the fabric). Recommend removing thread and bobbin (needle and presser foot). Slowly move the handwheel and put your finger on top of the feeddogs to determine if they are moving back and forth and are high enough to move the fabric. Check to make sure you had not manually lowered the feed dogs. You may need to take it to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for their assistance.
